    Just opened a can of worms I believe. We got yet another fleet wide msg about idling...tips to lower it. I snapped and fired off a msg to my A/M....if they want me to lower my idle, fine...get me home every 21 days (I am on the RDO21 fleet), no more of this months at a time stuff. It'll lower my productivity and pay and it'll lower the amount of revenue I earn for the company, but it'll also lower my idle time...they want lower idle time...they got it...along with less income.

    The latest numbers just came out and turnover for carriers over $30 million in revenue was 92%, meaning that if you start the year with 100 drivers, on average, only eight will still be there on December 31.

    SSB is hardly unusual in this industry. His experiences are symptomatic of why turnover is where it is.

    I’m well aware of the turnover rate for most of the big carriers. Most of the sheep involved in the turnover problem get excited over the glossy pictures in the truck stop magazines and jump ship every few months thinking it’s for the better. Soon to find out it’s the same problem but different colored truck. The real problem is every time you jump ship you lose about 3 weeks of pay until you get used to the new systems with the new job. Pick your poison.

    I don’t think people upend their lives over glossy photos of trucks and some B.S.. My experience has been that it’s the negative things that drive them out and not the positive ones that attract them.

    I’ve seen world class stupidity in trucking management and I’ve seen many trucking “managers” who earn less than the (good) drivers.

    You cats that disagree with me seem to have it all figured out so carry on. I wasn’t trying to get into a pissing match with any of you, just trying to talk Snackbar off the ledge. He’s a big boy, he’ll figure it out.

    That 92% number is misleading as it counts everyone who makes it past the first day or orientation. Roughly 25% of the people we bring into orientation never make it to thier own truck.

    Then you've got they guys who quit before 90 days because they can't handle being alone/not having their emotional support peacock.

    Then all the guys who "can't make any money" - which as ssb has shown tends to be more user error than company failure.

    Take those guys out of the mix and the turnover percentage drops. One of the plants we run out of has 5 drivers who have been running that account since we got it. Just before Christmas the plant decided they needed another truck. We've "hired" at least 8 people for that slot. 2 young kids that quit on their second day or road training, at least 2 who didn't make it put of the classroom, an "experienced " outside hire who quit after I yelled at him for dragging his brakes a mile and a half (both tires gone, rims damaged), 1 guy who mouthed off to the plant's safety guy and got termed, one guy who quit after a few weeks due to pay, and one guy who quit over pur company's stupid sleep apnea policy.

    120% turnover just to fill one truck, meanwhile the other 5 drivers are happily doing their thing.

    Using your own example, the bulk of the turnover, 67% (92% - 25%), still has nothing to do with getting past orientation and it's still absurdly high.

    Being OTR is difficult emotionally - there is a lot of solitude. That kind of solitude can break the hardest of men. No one is eager to go into solitary confinement in prison. Spend enough Christmases and Thanksgivings alone in a distant rest area and perhaps your mocking tone would change.

    Landline ran a much more driver empathetic article three months ago looking at the reality drivers face with that kind of turnover. Perhaps if you shared some of that empathy your turnover wouldn't be as high either.
