Sitting in a parkinglot today I was running our 2013 Supra 650. It started up fine, brought the box down to temp, and cycled off. Every 3 minutes or so it starts up again, cycles off, and repeats about 6 times before failing to start with a "startfail" error and alarm beep. I turn the unit off and back on, starts right back up and the same thing happens. It's happened about 3 times in a row now.

I disabled Auto Start to see what happens and it runs for a while and then shuts down, which it shouldn't do. Then it restarts fine, runs, shuts down again, then eventually "startfail" hits.

So it seems the unit doesn't want to run more than x minutes before it quits. Restarting isn't a problem for a few times, then it is. Restarting manually always works.

There's no other indication of any problems. Starts right up, runs very smooth, brings it down to temp etc. And it should, because I just dropped $4500 to fix it!

Any idea what might be going on?

    Thanks!

I had one of our reefers lube oil and filters and it did the same , fuel filter was loose and sucking air , Penske was always good at overtightening them with channel locks and poking holes in them.
    Did you save the codes.
    Good Luck

    Thanks Capacity!

Your comment is much to my liking! After making my initial post I thought of a fuel supply problem and looked at the fuel filter. It certainly could use a replacement. With your experience thrown into the mix, I'm hoping a new one will do the trick. Would be nice if that's all that it is!

The code is AL3 - STARTFAIL

After I land myself a filter I'll report back.

    Thanks!

I finally had a chance to do some work and test the theory that the inline fuel filter (just outside the saddle tank) is the problem. And sure enough, it was! Since cleaning the unit has not given me a "startfail" error and has instead run fine.

The interesting thing is the filter wasn't all that badly clogged up. Sure, gelled fuel was in there but it looked like it wasn't enough to restrict flow all on its own. My theory is the fuel filter on the unit itself is also partially plugged and the two together caused to much restriction. Cleaning out the inline filter got me enough flow, but probably not for too long. I have a full set of filters for the unit, just trying to get the time to change them.

Thanks Capacity for getting me onto the right trail.
