What Truck GPS Do You Use?

Google maps on my phone, but I rarely go to new places.

 

I use Google Maps as well. In OTR operation. I just look over the end of the route and make sure to stay on state roads/highways instead of cutting through neighborhoods and follow truck route signs. When in the North East I’ll google the truck routes and guide google maps that way. Especially in Vermont.

I used a Rand GPS from about 1998, streets and trips on two DVD's and a serial GPS reciever. Its consistent to 15 and 40 feet, give or take a dozen.

My cell knows what room it is on any where in the freaking planet now. If it has enough towers to see and figure its position without GPS if necessary these days.

I still insist on using the old nogging between my ears. If I get lost, thats what the wife is for. //teasing...

 

I forgot to add why I like google maps.

1. Satellite view. Perfect for finding secret parking places. In the oilfields it helps to verify your directions with this. Helps you get familiar with your pickup/delivery locations before you get there.
2. Very up to date maps for free. Sometimes google will give you a better address than the customer. It knows about road closures.
3. Knows about traffic jams ahead so I don't have to get surprised and have to slam on the brakes.
4. Most of you will hate this, but I love the location services. I like to download the data and see a heatmap of all the locations i've been in my lifetime.

I am a happy user of Rand Mcnally RM 740 for 2.5 years. I believe compared to the Garmin 780 the RM has a reputation as not very reliable. I have no real complaints.

 

I've got a garmin. Not the giant one that a lot of 'drivers' have in the middle of the windshield, but the little one...tucked way up and to the right, out of my sight line. Sometimes it plots my route for me, most of the time I'm following permits and the GPS just gives a heads-up that my turn is coming up. For delivery locations, I'll pull up Google satellite images to find the best way into a place. Occasionally, I'll just wing it. All electronics in the truck are at idle. I'm going from here to there, (think Grover from sesame street), I'm legal and I'm not in a hurry or overly concerned about how many miles. Just head out and the load gets there about 1 second after I do.
Like many here, I started driving before people forgot how to read maps. These days I think they're given a GPS straight out of whatever mill they gradumutated from. To me, they're just another tool. They're definitely not to be relied upon.
