Fellow drivers I need some opinions. I am currently employed with a company doing local driving. I make $21 an hour, with straight time even for overtime but also don't work too much overtime. I am off every weekend. The last time we shut down because of COVID they did pay us, but not sure if they are going to if we have to shut down again. Meanwhile the customer we do hauling for in the division I am in, may close due to orders being canceled. If they do shut the local stuff I am doing now down, and want us to run their regional stuff I think they pay .38cpm for that. The trucks are definitely "sub-par". They may pass DOT but that's about all there is to say good about the trucks. The trailers are absolute junk.

I was offered a job that's OTR, home every 5-7 days, but I would be comfortable with being out two weeks. It pays .50cpm and the truck is a brand new Volvo. Only real issue there is no benefits. I don't necessarily "want" to leave where I am now. But I also don't want to chance it and either be out of a job, or be doing whatever regional junk they have for .38cpm. So I guess I am wondering what would you all do? The difference in pay, even if I only ran 2500 miles per week instead of the 3500 or so the OTR job claims, I would still make $400 more per week.

Oh no. It's w-2. I made sure of that before I even applied for it. I won't do the "company driver on 1099" game.

No other local jobs in your area that you could apply to?

Have you driven OTR ever or just home nightly driving jobs?

4mer trucker and Metalicious Thank this.

Not any worth commuting to as far as local. I would make about the same pay. And some of those local jobs are the 1099 variety. Yeah, I have driven OTR before. A few times. Long as the money is good, it's not bad. When I took this local job the OTR company I was running for paid percentage and ended up just getting lots of really low paying loads and it stayed that way until they sold out to another company. I left before they sold out. Heard all the drivers got fired and had to reapply with the company that bought them out, if they wanted to stay.

I'm north of the Dallas area. I've got tanker and doubles/triples. I live near Denton.

Here's a smaller reefer outfit that's east of Dallas and you can be home every weekend or stay out if you prefer.
