BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Two different crashes happened Thursday afternoon on I-65 around 1:30 p.m.

In the first accident, multiple semi-trailers crashed in Boone County, injuring two people.

Boone County officials said the semi-trailers crashed at mile marker 149. The crash has shut down NB I-65 in this area.

The closure is between Exit 146 and 158, about 13 miles north of Lebanon.

There was a second accident down the road near mm 142 that also resulted in injuries. A pickup truck was apparently tailgating a car behind a semi. The driver, 77-year-old Richard Wingard of Flora, didn't observe traffic was stopped due to the semi accident, failed to slow his truck and slammed into the rear of an SUV.

Wingard's truck then continued northbound crashing into yet another vehicle.

Wingard suffered head, hand and leg injuries and was transported to St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis.

Traffic is being rerouted to 52 northbound from the Lebanon exit.

Police said the accidents may not be cleared for another 6 hours between mm 146 and 160.

I always felt that stretch of 65 between Indy and I 80 to be particularly dangerous. It seems the LTL drivers that run everyday to Windy and back have poor drviing habits, ie too fast for traffic, too fast for road/weather conditions. Mix in alot of northern IL people in four wheelers, that generally have poor drving skills, trying to get home quickly from a day trip to Indy. Mix in alot of frustrated otr drivers, many not happy to be going to Chicago anyway, plus they've likely been driviing all day and are just trying to get to the he11hole of truckstops at the north end of 65 to rest before their a.m. delivery in sh1tcargo. These everyday factors are a accident waiting to happen! I wasnt surprised to read of multiple semis involved in one crash, it seems many otr drivers forget their safe driving skills after watching the chaos around them, tailgating, unsafe lane changes etc, just like it is on 80-94 across northern IN into Chicagoland! I HATED driving 80-94!
My preferred route was exit 230, go west to US 41N, IN 2W, IL 1/394 back to 80 and judging from the truck traffic this route, many other drivers favored this route also, altho it was mostly 2 lane it moved well and was far less stressful than 80-94 imho.
Hmm, this seems to have become a rant, sorry bout that. In my 20 yr driving career I made the trip from Mobile, AL to Chicagoland too many times to count, bi-weekly sometimes and I 65, 80-94 north of Indy was hated!!
WOW, I retired from otr in 2009 and I still have strong feelings about this and yes I did enjoy most of my otr career but sometimes....:biggrin_2552::biggrin_25525:
