Started flatbed division orientation 1/19/2015 at the Gary, IN terminal. Hotel that we stay at is the Comfort Inn in Hammond, IN; and is pretty nice.

    Day 1
Have to be downstairs by no later than 6:40 a.m. to catch the shuttle to the terminal about 10 miles away. They take students straight to the medical clinic to get DOT physical and pre-work screen completed. This takes half the day due to everyone else in the area using the facility too lol. Breakfast is free in the hotel and starts at 6:00 a.m., lunch and dinner Roehl pays for. They get the food from a greek restaurant and yoh do have quite a few choices. The gyros are pretty good, and the patty melt is as well. The rest of the day is spent in the classroom filling out a short paper application in case anything changed between the time of doing the online application and coming to orientation. They also made copies of ssn card, DD 214, physical and drug screen paper work. We were introduced to the orientation operations manager, and the instructors. So far I am really impressed with the company!

Good luck with orientation. I just started CDL school yesterday in Joliet, IL (Chicago). Roehl and Schneider are the 2 companies I am really looking at. Cool to hear that training is in Gary, I live 30 minutes from there.

Got a couple of questions for you. Hope you dont mind answering...

How long did it take for them to give you an orientation date? How often do they offer them?
Yeah that Comfort Inn is decent. Do you get your own room, or are you sharing....
How long is the whole orientation process? And how long are you going to be on the road with a trainer?

Once again good luck and keep us posted! I will definitely be following this....

You will be sharing a room while in orientation. The OTR training time is between 9-14 days. It took about two days to get confirmed with a flight and orientation date.

    Day 2

We worked on the driving simulators and drove around the yard. We also worked on idle shifting, progressive shifting, and pre trip/post trip inspection. In addition, worked on log books and the safe 7.

Sounds like you guys are learning a lot. How are the instructors/trainers so far? Do you get to go home at any point or you there for the long haul til orientation and training on the road is all over?

After securement training, there's one more half day of classroom/paperwork. Then I will meet my fleet manager, give them my bank account information and officially become an employee. After this they will tell me when I will meet up with my trainer and will be out with the trainer for up to 14 days. Once the trainer releases me, I will take a road test, perform a PTI, and perform a 45 degree back and a straight back. Once I pass that, they will assign me a truck, which may or may not be in Gary, IN.
