I feel about driving in Florida the same way most truckers feel about driving in New Jersey.

I'll take 10 trips to Jersey to avoid one trip to Florida.

Sketchiest place I've ever spent the night in my truck was on the outskirts of Miami. Place called Hialeah Gardens. Parked right here for the night, on the frontage road in front of the auto glass place.

    Google Maps

This was back when I was brand new at driving, so it took me a while to get parked. Whole time I'm getting turned around and backed in, this bald white dude is standing around outside the auto glass place, smoking a cigarette and watching me. Never let me out of his sight while I was in motion. If I pulled forward around the corner, he'd step out far enough to keep me in view. He didn't go back inside until I'd parked and set the brakes. Definitely got the feeling he was a lookout for the Russian Mob or something, and that I had inadvertently parked in front of one of their hangouts.

I use to think the drivers on 95 in the Carolinas were the worst. The stretch between the turnpike entrance at Fort Pierce and Lake Worth exit, a mere 59 miles for me to get home, has the worst, over aggressive, distracted drivers of anyplace in the country. That Russian mob you speak of? It’s actually the Cuban mob. That area is called little Havana. Watch the opening scene of Scarface, that’s what settled there in 1980 during the Mariel boat lift when Castro opened his country to let anyone leave, what we found out was he emptied his jails and they all wound up in Miami.

He was probably just in awe of how lucky you were to find parking at all.

Yowzers! Longest DH I’ve ever gotten. 1161 miles down to Santa Fe Springs CA. Now to figure out how to get there from Wenatchee.

Take 97 all the way south. It will intersect with 5 by Weed California. Beautiful drive. There’s a Loves and Pilot down by Klamath Falls. DO NOT stop at that cluster of a Pilot in Weed. Worst parking lot in the country.

Mine was 1745 miles from Colton to West Memphis, just to pick up a loaded trailer and bring it right back to the Colton yard.

Yes, but isn’t that the Pilot with the awesome view of Mt Shasta?
