Right now there is not as much money in anything but campers are the easiest to get started in and easiest on the truck. There are some guys who've been doing it for decades and like the ease of it. It's wading around in the kiddie pool compared to hauling freight or cars on your own trailer with your own DOT/MC. There is more money but also larger up front investment and risk.

 

More money in hauling light weight expedited, using one ton and 40 ft trailer IMO

 

I don't think towing RV's is all that bad $$$/mile. It's usually slim to none finding something to pull to get you back. If a guy could haul RV's down to the south & then find boats to run back north that would be ideal but I don't think that happens very often.

 

Freight pays better then vehicles but if I were you I’d set up to run both. We do, and we do pretty good.

 

What kind of companies do you guys look for to find direct customers for hot shot loads? Really you only need a few solid customers and you can do pretty well.

 

Any company manufacturing, or shipping any type of freight that’ll work on my equipment. That’s what I go after. I have shippers that I’ve hauled direct for for 37 years, and I’ve hauled for many of the same brokers for over 25 yrs.

The thing is, never back solicit a shipper/manufacturer that you connected with through a broker that you’ve hauled for. It’s not a smart move.
If you're loading, or unloading somewhere and across the street, or down the street you see a shipper/manufacturer with freight that you’d like to haul, by all means walk over, introduce yourself and give them your card.

Having direct shippers and manufacturers to haul for isn’t always as good as it sounds. It would be handy for you to have some direct work today though with the shape load boards are in. A lot of times when a shipper calls me out of the blue I’ll actually give them the contact information for the better brokers that I haul for. The broker is typically gonna call me first when the shipper calls them with a load anyways. A owner operator isn’t always gonna be in the area to cover their loads when they need them.
