There is leeway, just not with your company maybe. My company (me) cares not a bit about ELD. I use PC when needed but I don't abuse it and I have used the 'emergency conditions' exemption about 5 times since I got an ELD. Just like Brandt said above it gets you out a jamb, legitimately. If your company doesn't honor this then they are backing up.

By forcing you to take a 10 so close to home they are costing you productivity and general job satisfaction, not to mention costing you both money.

Next time I’m going to leave a night earlier to make the run and they are going to buy a nice dinner and drinks for me. My company use to not care much. Then corporate came in and now they are cracking down on some stuff but not all of it. If I were a contractor they would t care that I don’t even log on and use the ELD, but employees they do.

I actually looked at doing that. But the dang things will rat you out because they see that there has been miles put on the truck. Friggin electronics!

I’ve done a tire check on duty . It’s not my fault I didn’t get going fast enough to trip it back to driveline. Least not till after the pinch point anyway

Ran out of hours 8 miles from the office, in an area where my only option would be to stop in the middle of the lane and take my 10, I decided to drive to the office, company didn't care, ELD provider told my boss they see it happen all the time, their advice is to notate the log, on both the driver and company end to protect us in an audit.

I was once put out of service in a random stop because the slack adjusters were 1/2 inch looser than allowed. By law, you have to receive training to adjust the brakes, training which my company didn’t offer.

I lost a $4,500 safety bonus because of that.

Couldn't you have taken it to a TA or something?

That's why I don't believe in these bonuses. Companies promise bonuses to get drivers at the door and when they have enough drivers they start cutting bonuses or maintenance. Drivers quit, time to hire new drivers. Rinse and repeat.

No law says they have to train you to adjust brakes. But the DOT doesn't have to let you adjust them if you don't have a card from your company saying you have been trained in brake adjustment and that you are allowed to do so. Found that out from a DOT at the Limon POE. Had to call the TA to come down and adjust the brakes because my company at the time didn't want the drivers doing brake adjustments so I didn't have that card.
