Going flatbed with Roehl was one of the options I contemplated when I was getting started. I decided I didn't want to do flatbed. So, ended up going with Swift and doing reefer. It worked out well for me and after almost 2 years still with Swift with no real desire to go elsewhere.
Good luck to you with Roehl. They seem a decent company to drive for from what I've seen.

 

Roehl will pay you while you're in their school i believe. Probably a good choice.

I started with Roehl back in 2012, but I did dry van. If you search these forums you will see a lot of mixed reviews about them.... all I can say is I enjoyed my time there, learned a lot, met some great people, but after one year of the otr game I decided to move on and worked my way into local work.

I would go to roehl again if I had the choice to do it over.

 

For me they were a good place to start. Lots of support, answers for any questions. Kind of penny pinchers for a mega. Trucks have outlets, inverters, electric apu which runs heat/AC with the truck off, and truck automatically starts to charge the batteries. They’re really good about home time, you’re preferred schedule, and they’re just generally flexible. However there is more money to be made elsewhere, especially after your first year. Stick through the contract.

 

The thing about big companies like Roehl is they have a lot of silly rules and company policies, red tape, politics, etc. Some folks sign up without reading the fine print and then decide they don't want to play by the rules. Usually these are the tough talking know it all types, and they almost never make it.

My advice to you, or any rookie, is to just suck it up and play along for awhile, learn the basics and have a good time. Trucking isn't rocket science.

Once you get that first year in you will probably have a pretty good idea where you want to go from there, and as long as you keep your #### together, there won't be anything to stop you from going where you want.
