    Hey all,

The company I am driving for has a 2005 IH 8600 with an ISM Cummins in it, it has an issue and they asked me to hunt down parts for it. Turbo has the VGT stuck open, it has been diagnosed twice as not being an actuator issue, that it is stuck/seized open on the inside the guts of the turbo. Speaking with the turbo shop in my area they suggested just replacing it all together as opposed to any sort of rebuild or repair. Current turbo is a Holset 3781166, I can get that exact turbo but the price is far higher than my boss can stomach (3-5k) so I am hoping to find like a Borg Warner that will work. I’ve tried using various numbers to cross reference over to anything else and haven’t had any luck. But I have found a number of Borg Warner’s under 1k for that engine and that year but the OEM numbers do not cross.

My question is this, if it says it’s for that engine and that year do the cross reference numbers really matter? Turbos to a point, to my limited knowledge, have some flexibility in their fitment.

Further more if anyone has any part numbers for turbos that would work I would like to hear them.

I won’t claim to be a mechanic but I do some light duty repairs on what I drive, I know more about this stuff then anyone else where I work so these tasks fall to me but this is a bit more than I am used to dealing with but I just have to find the parts.

You cannot install a standard turbo in place of a VGT turbo without a delete.
It is possible that the same engine model had both styles of turbos the same year from the factory.
I thank I got one of those from James Turbo in Georgia for about $2,200.00. There is an other company in NC that has come up on this forum with great references.

Was it 2200 for just the kit or did that include a turbo too? If you come across the place in NC let me know the name or send a link. I’ll look into the James place, would I be asking about the delete or a turbo itself? I think my boss can work with that price. Thanks

They only do turbos. No advice on swapping around. Tag for tag or sell you what you request. That was an exchange turbo for a 2008 ISM a year or so ago. Did not include sensor.
Someone else may chime in but I do not know the other companies. Search block at top right might lead you to them and or others.
