I was wondering if the lights aren't flashing on the sign you don't have to enter the inspection station right before the tunnel on I64 in Hampton, VA. Because it looked like someone was in the booth but the sign lights weren't flashing and the sign I noticed as I'm driving by said it was open 24 hours

It's manned 24-7 for the vehicles that do have to pull in there.....but no unless it's flashing you don't enter

I live close to this area and to be honest I have not paid much attention to it. In the case of east bound the bridge tunnel is a foot higher then the west bound and I think their primary goal is keeping prohibited hazmat out of the HRBT. I am not sure but I don't think the officers that man the stations are even DOT enforcement officers.

They aren't DOT officers they work for the tunnel. You only have to stop if you are hauling hazmat, or your. Oversize, I think 10'6" wide or more. The only other reason to pull in is if your over height, the the look lights come on and you must pull in.

Nope, you only stop if you have HM or if the lights are flashing. I trigger their height warning all the time and when I pull in (as I'm dumping my bags) the 2nd alarm doesn't go off and I go right through :)

That's funny. I was told to dump my airbags before the alarms and leave them down until I'm through the tunnel. I'm pulling a standard 53' but I guess it just barely triggers the alarms.

I used to work there. Why did I give up that easy job? I was a tow truck driver but I also would work the over height stations when short handed.

Now I'm a truck driver. Truck driver is a hard job to leave because it's hard to get a job making as much money.
