You are going to Star in Morton. How much per mile are they going to pay you?
Take that times the possible miles you expect to get.

The training period they all talk about is different for each company. That is usually what you are paid when you are out with the trainer.

Your gross pay after you go solo is what you will be making per mile. This will have many items that can have an effect on them.

Some companies charge you for advance fees (taking payment on the card, Not adviseable to do)
    Insurance costs
    Other insurance
    etc.

We are just trying to make sure that your eyes are open. We wish the best for all trying to enter the field. Recruiters always talk of the good things whether real or not.

My Brother in Law worked many years ago for Star. I personally have no connection or knowledge how they work. I do know where the yard is since I pass it about twice a month.

    Magic,

A horrible mistake means JB Hunt, CR England, SWIFT and more, LOL. Yes, on your first year you will be used and abused the likes of which you cannot fathom at this point. UNLESS you are a Mexican, of course. Trucking into the sunset is not reality...trucking into a world of hell is more like it. I am NOT trying to dissuade anyone from trucking, but rather them look into it FULLY before they go into it. Like JAM said, most drop out, actually, in LESS than 9 mos. because of the sheer hell of it all. Star out of Morton, IL is not too bad of a company, so I think you should be ok. Just realize...this is far from paradise to be sure.

    MagicFingers,

well my hubby been driven for going on 5 months now , he is with usa trucks when he trained he got 350 , when eh stated driven solo so his frist pay he brought home around 300 but his gross around 600, it goes up and down but you have to think if the take out for you taxes and then they take out for your pay back of your school and take out for you escrow it all adds up . he as been geting better miles each week he stays out 4 weeks at a time so when he home for 4 day that check is his lowest one he also take out for him self his advance for the week . his highest one for gross as been 1140 and brought home was 783. . so it what you make out of it and hard you work for it . this is a great place to learn things but take what you hear for what you wont because this is what others fill and you have to make your own dream and if this is what you really wont then you will make it to be what its going to be for u .my thing is that the frist year the hardest because you have so many thing there taken out and your paying back and when it all said and done and you been there your year you dont ahve as much comeing out . any way just though i put my 2 cents in here Jen

Wow guys, you all really made me feel better with those last few posts. I've been hearing bad things about Star, but for the owner of this site tell me I'll be okay with them is VERY reassuring. Thank you, oh wiseone!!

During training, they will be paying me 375 dollars a week, then when I'm OTR, I'll be receiving .28 cpm. Then after 3 SAFE months, they'll bump me up to .30cpm. Not too bad I don't think. I think about truckin' 24/7. Last night I had a dream about it even, so yes, I think it is truly a passion of mine. I know that I am going to love it, through the thick AND the thin (ie. hell) and I'm going to strive VERY hard to become one of my employer's favorite drivers, thus yielding me more miles I'm sure.

Roadmedic, I gave them a voided check, so I'll be getting direct deposit. As for the amt. they take out for the schooling, it's only 40 bucks a week (160/month) for 12 months. That's not all that bad.

Star has basically assured me I'll be able to have as many miles as I can take, so that's good...

safetydog, thank you for the uplifting comments. Anderson trucking is one of the biggest heavy haul carriers out there, but they also have dry van loads and reefers I believe. You have to work your way up through the ranks with THEM in order to qualify heavy haul. So after my contract is up with star, I have them as my top priority on my list. If I can't get with them, I'll shoot myself, jk, no, then I'd be looking at Prime, Crete, and maybe Watkins Shepherd. Heavy haul is my dream though.

About 4 years ago, I was going down the highway, and I saw 3 company trucks (not sure which) carrying parts for a commercial airliner. HUGE wings, and the last one had the engines (I think that's what they were.) After that, I was hooked on heavy hauling. Oh, and plus my dad used to work for Mcgonnel Heavy haul back in the '70s hauling Earth movers, various dozers, etc. His stories really inspired me as well.

Anyways, thanks again to everyone and I apologize for acting so foolishly. I'm really not a greedy person. :biggrin_25519:

You're having doubts about getting in. No surprise. You should definitely play it smart, then. Take it from an expert--go cheap on training. Do NOT drop a wad to learn how to drive a rig.

Here's a good chant you can practice the next few weeks. You can sit indian style and meditate if you need to:

Go cheap on training. I don't know if I'll like it.
Go cheap on training. I don't know if I'll like it.
Go cheap on training. I don't know if I'll like it.

NP! LOL. Well, they have their problems to be sure, but are no where near JB Hunt, etc. Funny thing is I started trucking almost 14 years ago and started out at .27/mile. Amazing how all these years it hasn't changed!

You mean to say your first year wasn't 36,000 like they say today?

Magic, figure your first year out will be your REAL basic training. You will have good freight weeks and bad weeks, you'll have breakdowns and bad weathers and have to from time to time deal with those sub-human lifeforms known as night and weekend dispatchers.:biggrin_25520: But if you can survive the first year you will have a good a good handle on how this industry works, you will know the good companies a have the experience to work for them. Just remember when you grab hold of that steering wheel YOU are responsible for that truck, run hard but run safe and legal and don't let anyone, especially the dispatchers push you into doing otherwise and someday you can sit here and type all this crap to some newbie. :biggrin_2559:

Thanks again you guys. I hope that I can make more than 19 grand my first year. After three months I go up to .30cpm. That's really not that bad, considering the size of Star (they only run 900 tractors). The oldest truck they have is only 5 years old. They sell their rigs after 400-500k, then get new ones, so I'm positive that I won't be stuck with that old of a rig, which is also nice. I've seen 4 star trucks recently, and they all were late model, and pretty nice. (petes/cat engines)

Captcaveman, yeah, I know I'm gonna run into some weather, especially considering by the time I'm done with Star's training it'll be late oct. early nov., so I'll basically be starting on my own in the brink of winter. YAY!! I honestly can't wait.

You guys have done a great job in aiding my preperations for this industry. I'm ready to take on whatever trials and tribulations I encounter. I'm also only 21 yrs. old (gonna be 22 this month), so I think that's advantageous for me. Anyway, cheers to you all. :biggrin_25514:
