Recently I decided to make a career change from retail management into trucking. My options have been limited because I’m Type 1 diabetic (insulin dependent) and I’ve already been shot down by multiple companies despite getting a medical card. I’m based in Texas, about an hour and a half east of Dallas.
Maverick, Roehl, Millis, and Swift have all made offers and would like to schedule me but they are all very different in offerings.
What I’m concerned about most is money/miles (overall pay). I’ve been with Lowe’s for 12 years so I’m making low 50’s. It’s not that I’m hurting for money but I’m also not trying to take a huge pay cut. The other concern is with being so far out of Dallas.... or any city for that matter, I would like to find a company that allows me to bring the truck home. So far the only one that confirmed this is Maverick. From what I can gather, Maverick seems to pay the highest per mile but I can’t seem to find a good source on how many miles they actually average. Roehl is another top contender, with the number one thing I hear repeated is home time. That’s not so much an issue for me. Yes I have a family but were aware of the sacrifice and. Millis would have been my top pick but they don’t have any training available until May and with the hub in burleson, that’s nearly 2.5 hours away. I would have to be able to bring the truck home. It’s just way too far to drive. Sucks because I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about them. And then there’s Swift. I’m not really sure how to feel about Swift. They’re big so they’re probably not going anywhere but the ppm is the lowest of the bunch and I’ve heard the equipment can be old. I can almost guarantee I’m not bringing the truck home but there’s a yard in Dallas.

Fwiw, Raider and Steven’s have contacted me but I don’t know enough about them.
What are some of your opinions? Did I miss any that might be a better fit?

The ones who won’t take me :
    TMC
    Wilson logistics
    Prime
FFE(not for diabetes, they want me to have a TX license for 3 years, I moved from NY 2 years ago)

Surprised to hear that about Roehl. Not surprised about Swift. My mind is a little more calculated and facts based.... any specific reasons?

If your making low 50's now, then you will make less at Roehl. Meanwhile the pay will be better at Maverick and you will have more home time.

Of the few companies you listed, Maverick would be the best choice. And living in Longview, Tyler, or Marshall you will get runs through the area outside of hometime.

Low $50's days are over for you in trucking. Maybe your first year, but after that, plan on $60K or better.
Maverick, Swift Refrigerated, Millis, Western Dairy Transport.

I live in fruitvale but since no one knows where that is (is literally a one light town) the closest town anyone knows of is Canton. About 10 minutes south and right on HWY 20 so if I get runs going through there I could run home and see the kids and wife. The Maverick recruiter was funny. She asked if I had a big enough driveway to park the truck. I said “eh.... I’m sure I can spare an extra acre or 2. The other 13 are strictly for my gun range, hunting stand, and dirt track”. I think she thought I was kidding because she responded by saying, well you can just find a local lot lol. City folks just don’t get it‍♂️

If you worked retail you’d say the same. Given no college degree and no other real life skills it’s about all I’ve got going for me right now.
