I'm 50+ and I'm going to sign on with Swift. My wife and I want to drive as a team. Ive been reading on this forum and others about the lack of real training from Swift. I quess the worst would be training in backing a truck. I also know the cdl schools around me aren't the best. I dont want to go into this field with just enough knowledge to be dangerous. My question is if money isn't a problem would taking a private school that goes 7 days and trains hard on backing and then taking the Swift traing be a bad idea or would Swift even let me go thru training if I had a cdl already. Can anyone answer that for me? I just want to do whatever I can to be safe and make it in the long haul. :biggrin_2553:

A 7 day school might get you a cup of coffee somewhere, but that is about it. Most schools are at least a month. 150-160 hours. You will still need a trainer at your first company. I look at it this way; if I am going to get into trucking do I want to go the quickest and easiest way and probably bail in 6 months or less or do I plan to make this work and go into it better prepared? You get the wrong school and the wrong company and it is a recipe for failure. Odds are against new drivers as it is. Most bail quickly when they get a taste of it. I would go in with a little more edge in my corner.

I would never dream of going to a 7 day school and think that I could drive a truck. What I want to do is take the 7 day course and then go thru company training. I realize that I would then have to ride with a trainer for 6 weeks.

Who will hire you with a 7 day school? Why Swift? You yourself has said you have read about them. If swift was my only choice I would not drive a truck. I have been off the road for awhile. I know of one decent company that will hire if you hold a Class A. You have to go out with a trainer. Swift to me would not be an option. I sure would not want to take my wife there as well. Somebody has to bring in a paycheck that will pay the bills.
