Regional or local?

What do YOU want? Many linehaul jobs are home daily. Regional might be home weekly.

 

i would apply to all the line haul jobs..all they can say is no. nothing is impossible.

 

I wanted to drive line haul with pitt Ohio express and southeastern freight, both are mins from my house but I got the come back when I reach a year of experience then i could could get on.Some companies may really be hurting to hire drivers and may give you a shot but good luck.

 

I don't know what line hauling is, but I started local. Going local right out of school can be done. Now whether or not you'll want to do it is another matter.

The list of companies with local work that will hire recent grads is short. And many on that short list are not going to be particularly good places to work. Low pay is to be expected and more or less goes without saying. Being expected to break the law regularly is not usual for many of those companies. Also keep in mind that just because you get home for your 10 hour beak every day doesn't automatically mean you'll get to spend more time with the family. If you're working 3pm to 5am Wednesday through Sunday, not a lot of opportunity for quality family time there.

But like the others have said, there is no harm in applying. Just choose carefully because you might not like where you end up.

 

Go apply at any ltl trucking company that's your best shot at any line haul gig. Just like in any company you will have to pay your dues you might start off at city p&d but at least you will be home every night.

 

Its not true you don't have to go otr. I just got my cdl in march and just started with an ltl company in may since I didn't have exp and wasn't comfortable driving yet I chose to go through a school they run at their own yard free of charge. If you want to go straight to driving all you have to do is pass a road test with the company.

 

Worked line haul for about 1 month after getting 5 months on road. I'm not saying YOU won't like it, but it definately not for everyone.

In my situation, I had to hang around the house in the early evening and wait for a phone call before I leave for work. Usually around 7pm. Get to the terminal and get assignment, hook up doubles and drive about 2 1/2 hrs., unhook and work the dock with a forklift for about 6 hours (high speed), hook up and drive doubles back. Get home about 8am and TRY to get sleep. My biggest problem is I can't sleep well during the day. Then start all over.

Pay was good. About $1200 / wk. But it definately takes a certain kind of person. Maybe for a young guy that likes long hours at night, it would be a good fit.

Went back to OTR and it felt like I was on vacation.
