How you drive is the biggest. Control the fuel cost. I eat out of the truck. I have some loads to Newfoundland and Yellowknife that paid 1.60 per mile.
Fuel planning is another.
I can run Elkhart to Houston on the advance of 50% and have money left over, about 200.00. I then put the 10% of the haul into the automatic maintenance fund.
This year sucked. Lost the motor at 904,000 miles and a transmission 50,000 miles later. But, it happens.

I am also doing the beginning research, I am currently hauling household goods with a CDL. My question is, is this a viable industry for "part-time" work? Can my wife and I do this together on weekends and weeks that I'm not working in household?

Its possible I suppose if your truck is already outfitted for this type of work. You may have an issue being leased on to two companies at a time.

The first husband and I have recently leased on to a company that keeps us busy for the most part. I suspect our loads are being pulled from load boards. We have talked to other companies which seem to pay better. But I am wondering if we couldn't do the same thing for ourselves. We pay about 70 a week to the company for insurance, which we could get ourselves via our own insurer.
The questions are where would we locate such boards? And would it be financially better to locate our own loads.? We have been transporting livestock trailers as well as rv's. We have a one ton 4x4 with fifth wheel and goose neck. We have zero issues staying out long periods and no unrealistic expectations of buckets of money. He has 20 yrs OTR so knows the road life. He drives and I co-pilot for now. Keeping up with load info and making sure his coffe stays filled...lol. We would like to learn all of the ins and outs regarding obtaining loads getting paid and so on so that eventually we can decide what works best for us.
Any advice is appreciated. -
I'm leased on to an RV Transport company. I pay $124.00 per month for insurance on my truck. My company provides insurance while loaded. They provide all outbound loads and look for loads coming back. Return loads are few and far between and normally don't pay as much.
I think if I were you two I would lease with a company that did driveaway and towaway. One drive an rv and one tow one. You would make more money but still be on the road together. Thats what I would do in your situation. -
Thanks! We have been discussing this as well. Right now we are looking around and weighing options. I actually like being out here with him. I guess if you can spend countless hours three foot apart weeks at a time you really have to enjoy each others company. .lol..

Now that you have been with Foremost for a year, assuming you are still with them, what do you think of them?
I have heard good and bad it's really hard to sort out the truth. I have purchased a truck and have it all set up have dot inspection, medical, cdl etc I am just trying to find a company to sign on with. I went thru orientation and such with another company ( CWRV ) if it's ok to mention the name, spent a week in Elkhart only to find out something a recruiter turned out to be an untruth. So needless to say I wasted a lot of time and money because of it.
