I was recently asked if I would want to switch positions at my job. Go from running 117k gross tankers to lowbed up to 187k. We are a construction company mostly road work. I’ve done wide loads to 14 ft reefer and flatbed as well as the tanker I’m doing now. I have close to 25 years in trucking. It would be a significant raise in pay. While that is nice I don’t want it being the deciding factor. We go anywhere needed highways state/county roads you get the picture. Besides slowing way down and not getting in a hurry. Taking off slow and easy. What are other things I have to consider if I take the job? I’m sure some of the stuff is pretty top heavy. Anybody with Wisdom want to give advice? They would like to know in the next day or two.

If it’s local it’s a lot of chaining (physical work) everyday . Also lots of early morning and late in the day moves so the equipment can be on site during the day when they need it.........

Can suck for down time. Waiting for permits. Not allowed to run at nights or weekends, holidays in some jurisdictions.

It is local but sometimes you run out of hrs and get a hotel room. It’s that way with the tanker also. I don’t mind long hrs. I’m a farm boy. Dad always said you were lazy if you weren’t working a lot of hrs. I am some out of shape. The chains will give me a work out probably make me sore for a while.

Few people go to work, liking their job.
Best job in the world. Nothing else compares or comes close.
Details and attention are very important. That said, it ain't for everyone.
Like any job, you will work with the greatest and worst guys.
Having a truck speced for, if you're lucky, over speced for the job is the icing on the cake! Only 8 axles here. Your 187K is out of my league. There are some members here doing big truck work. They will be your best info.
Biggest danger to the job is the idiot 4 wheelers

I remember all that from hauling wide loads sometimes it did suck. We are local and get paid by the hour so not as bad. But

It will definitely be different the 117k tankers are nothing compared to 187k. We are in Ny. State not the city in the good part. Still 4wheelers always a pain. I had a motorcycle break check me with a tanker last year. He’s lucky he’s not dead. As for specks all I know is they are western stars. Isx 15 and 18speed as for rears and so on I've never looked. I’ve driven them empty before they are nice trucks. I know out tanker trucks are gutted and no power. Guys told me they don’t nut the lowbeds. They will train but to what extent I don’t know. I trained for half a day when I came for tanker. They tend to be short driver. Good thing more than one lowbed goes to a job so I’d have experienced guys close to ask questions. I will there is no substitute for getting experience right from guys that have done it for years.

Tankers are three on trailer and 4 on truck. One lift axel each on truck and trailer. Lowbeds are 4 and 4 one lift on the truck. I believe but not positive the one or ones that lift are auto on lowbed. I think one lifts on lowbed. I need to get up and inspect the lowbeds more.

Liquid is top heavy too..... and it moves .

The weight isn’t that much more , and you got an extra axle.... just have to worry about the height and or width....
