UPS Freight Basic Questions for 2019

I hope they never start running freight like parcel when it come to getting seniority. In parcel let's say there is a guy out on comp and a guy out on disability. They can run two guys without granting seniority leaving them in a position to be sent back to preload/layoff until the list have everyone at work. We had a situation like that, there was a guy on long term disability that had a stroke really young or something. He was out so long I worked there for 17 years and never met the guy and he was still on the list when I left, because of that there would always be one dude that has worked for like two years without seniority. Y'all better get in while ya can because it's coming.... Have watched big brown turn overnite in to UPS Jr over the years. That's not saying it's a bad job because it's not....just more difficult. You will see what it is like to work for one of the world's largest corporations, it will be a new experience. To put it in perspective I just got a job offer as a mechanic at trans am...mega right? Girl told me they were up to 1400 trucks...we had many morere drivers in my local at UPS lol. Overnite kinda sucked, upsf kinda sucked, now upsf is getting a lot better like parcel but with that comes the way parcel is run. Please don't take this as me trying to say it's bad because it's not! I'm 38, worked 2 years preload, 15 years in a package car, 8 years shop steward. I ran my balls off and because of that UPS set me up to effectively retire and move back to Florida...that's a beautiful thing. Hang in there guys, I know it seems like ######## but it's ######## worth waiting for.

 

Once you get in the union you get your benefits as well.
I got mine early and so did everyone else hired around the same time as me. After 15 punches or so I look in my mailbox at home and there was my insurance packet with insurance cards etc.

I'm pretty sure nothing has changed with this new contract for full time employees.

 

A lot of that depends on your local. Rules on seniority and operations vary greatly between different locals.
In my building you can not jump to another classification and bump someone if things get slow.
Package guys moving up into feeder do not bring their seniority with them either. They go to the bottom but stay at top rate.

These are probably some questions that should be asked in interviews by anyone getting hired.

Being an on call driver I've been to MANY different hubs pretty much all within 330 miles of my hub. And they all do things differently. Completely different rules
It can get confusing.

 

In my local you carried seniority. I jump to feeder right before I decided to leave and had everyone all ####ed up because they hit a dry spell and had to hire outside guy a few years back so I was like 2/3 the way up the list lol. You are 100% right on these would be great questions to ask at a interview.

 

As requested. The most recent one is a bit low, mainly because of Independence Day not running and some goofy other stuff in the mix. I walked into this run mid year after a driver senior to me was terminated, but will still be on pace to be at $102k this year after I top out in September.

A full year of my current run next year will be over $120k.

 

####----even with my higher mileage and hourly pay, you are still blowing my A^& away. Although i think we still have better benefits, so......

There is yet ANOTHER HUGE factor, that i cannot discuss, that gives me the advantage and yet you've still grossed 5K more than me so far.

 

The debate between benefits is always on going. From my perspective, FXF has the benefit advantage but that whizzing contest could go on forever. But by no means do either company offer mediocre benefits.

I’m anxious to hit the 29.48/.7006 top out, a raise will be coming in October, we are all thinking about 4-5%, as the last raise came 6 months earlier in the year during the tax reform hubbub. Then again, that raise talk is rumor central anyway, won’t know until it happens.

 

The other factor that i was talking about is not benefits. It is something else that i cannot discuss even though i freely, honestly, openly, and unbiasedly talk about everything else.

But as far as benefits, how much do you pay for health?

 

I have Cigna through FxF and it’s $2.54/ week for the plan I chose with a $2250 annual deductible.

I think the best part of our benefits is the vision plan. $1.40/ week gets you free frames and lenses every 12 months or a free 12 month supply of contact lenses instead.
