Do you want someone out there that is color blind driving a CMV, come apon a red light that is flashing and mistake it for a amber ? There is a reason why people that are color blind do not drive a CMV. There is to many ways for you to mistake something and kill someone just because you wanted to cheat the system.

I do not remember seeing anything on the NC medical waiver for color blindness and yes I have a NC medical waiver for eye sight for 1 weak eye. How is a normal license done if color blind?

Now what was not asked or said how did you or are you going to get your medical card? When I went for my last one they had flash cards they showed you and you told them what number(s) you saw in the colored circles. Think there was 6 cards with all different colored numbers & circles.

BTW you can be almost blind in 1 eye and get a car license but for a CDL you must have better than 20/60 to pass your medical card. (edit 20/40 to 20/60)

Unless you have other issues and it could be 6 months or 1 year. Ask how I know ;)

Some states like Georgia will allow you to download a form (see below) to take to an eye doctor. I don't think you can do this with a CDL but in general you can use this form in place of the eye testing done at the GDDS office. Something tells me Georgia is not the only state that allows this for general licenses. Its something to check out.

It's been about six months since I renewed (at DMV). Best I remember (yea, I'm getting old), my test was being able to see a letter or number that is contained within one of those color test "plates".

That document looks to be the same one NC wants you to get filled out for a medical eye waiver.

As for the DOT card because I see a eye doctor every 4 to 6 weeks for needle in 1 eye for the rest of my life if I want to keep sight in it any way the CVS that did my DOT check up could not do the eye test part. Because I was to see the eye Dr. for shot I asked if they could do the DOT test part and I bring the papers back for my card. They said yes and I did just that.

Because my waiver did not transfer from the state I moved from (CT) after I was told it would and I started driving, my CDL was put on hold till I got a NC waiver. I was out of work for about a month and when I went back to work the company sent me for another DOT check up. It was 4 months since my last and 2 weeks from my eye test for the waiver. The place doing the check up looked at my eye paper work I sent in for waiver and said good enough and signed off the DOT medical card.

I can tell you, you need to get a state waiver first, hold it for 3 years before you can apply for a fed waiver. The state waivers are only good for INTRASTATE (in state only) and a restriction added to your CDL.
It is not fun but it is what I have to do to keep my CDL & driving job.
