The new turbos don't look very new

Just had my first rebuild done on my 07 International 9400i with a Cat C15 ACERT. 1.4m miles

    Photo attached below

My original turbos both had a bit of play but not that bad. No chunks missing or anything like that. The mechanics said that the turbos can not be rebuilt and had to be replaced. My concern is, the new aftermarket turbos don't look very "new". That pitting on the cold side and what looks like rust spots in the middle, looks like they just spray painted my old turbos silver.

So, is this normal for aftermarket turbos to look like that? Also, is there a way to check if it is my old turbos? Can I just take off the air inlet tube and check the compressor wheel for play, like my old turbo had? Btw they charged about $4400 for both turbos replacement, if that makes any difference.

I'd appreciate any input because this makes me very nervous since this is the 1st time I had a rebuild done and I paid a total of $31k for the job.

Are they new or reman? Were cartridges just put in your housings? It’s easy to point fingers but make sure you have all the info first. I will say no those are not new in my opinion. However doesn’t mean they were not replaced and you were only charged for remans not new. All that should be listed on the invoice

What’s up with the manifold studs and nuts don’t even have a full nut on the threads? Plus those are not the CAT lock nuts on there.

The lower turbo looks reman, I agree. Upper is hard to tell, you can only see the turbin housing. Actuator looks new. I doubt they just got rattle canned.

What brand is hard to say.

Reman stuff gets refurbished painted to look good and resold. Might not look the best. But they toook them apart re sealed etc etc.

Lower is either reman or low quality control aftermarket.

Those manifold nuts are definitely sketchy looking.

All look media blasted, common for reman or rebuilt. Agree on stud standout, going to have issues. You need to make a trip back to the repair shop.

Thank you all for putting me at ease that I wasn't had with what looked like my rattlecanned old turbos. The invoice just shows the part number, doesn't say if it's new or reman.

I didn't even notice the manifold studs because I was so focused on the turbo. I park my truck at the shop so I'll definitely let them know about the studs tomorrow.

Ignore the housings. Look and you may find Cat ReMan tags on the cartridges. The last set of turbos I got for my BXS looked a little sketchy like what I see there, but they had fresh cartridges and the pair were less than half the cost of the high pressure turbo from Cat. Been on the engine almost 4yrs with no issues.
