Is there a route from Wichita to San Antonio that allows you to avoid Dallas/ Ft. Worth? Drove through there a couple times this week and no matter the time it was crazy.

You can run I 35 down to Okie City then run I 44 down to Wichita Falls, Tx. Then U.S. 281 all the way to San Antonio. Miss that mess in Austin that way too. Lot of 2 lane on 281. Be better to time your run to hit Ft Worth in the night hours.
Running I 35W the Ft Worth is @12 miles shorter than I 35E through Dallas and I have found that it is usually a little faster. Of course, any small screw up will back up traffic there. Even someone changing a flat.NavigatorWife, Western flyer, CrappieJunkie and 6 others Thank this. -

Yeah, the 281 route is less of a headache, but more lights/small towns.
DFW is rarely the problem. It’s Waco to Austin that makes me decide to go 281, lol.NavigatorWife, Cobrakaiguy, slow.rider and 1 other person Thank this. -
DFW is not that bad, just run through there in the late evening, night or early early morning. Most routes around will have lights or small towns. If you come down 35 you can run 35w to the 820 loop to 20, and F4T6UY is right the Waco to Austin area with all the construction is worse then running through DFW.

To me 35 is the best option. 281 is hilly with lots of small towns.
NavigatorWife, F4T6UY and God prefers Diesels Thank this. -
NavigatorWife, F4T6UY and PacoTaco Thank this.

Use 35W if at all possible. Driving a CMV through the mixmaster even in non-rush traffic situations is tough! Years ago the Texas DOT fixed the east-west problem by routing I 20 south. Maybe one day they can find a solution to rerouting I 35 E&W.
NavigatorWife Thanks this.
