I used to work at Detroit Receiving/Hutzel. Most of our nursing staff were Canadian, they came for the pay, and surprisingly for the health insurance.

Another surprise was the fact that a great number of our patients were Canadian. Normally for cardiac care. This was back in the 80's, and at the time it was a 9 month wait to see a cardiologist in Windsor Ont., after one had a heart attack. The ones that could afford it, or had some sort of private insurance, came to Detroit to basically save their own lives.

I can only imagine a national health care system here, hell, they can't even run Medicaide! What makes them, and all of you, think they will do it better than what we already have. A system that is already rife with government interference on all levels.

Yes, it should be noted on your dot physical, but I don't see it stopping you from getting a job. There are quite a few guys out here with stents.

Just watch your diet out here. Not many decent places left to eat a good meal out here anymore. Fast and greasy food is the norm. Most of the good little places to eat are long gone.

A BIG NO, NO WAY to Universal Health Care. I don't want anybody but myself making decisions about my health care. All we would end up with is a bunch of government 'red tape' and no treatment. I currently do not have health insurance, can't get it (cancer survivor) and have no trouble getting the health care I need. I put into savings what I would have been paying in Insurance premiums and negotiate the price of everything. I've gotten $40,000 Hospital bills down to $4,500 with no trouble at all.

No way to goverment health care.

I think the 1st step to fixing our health care system is to get the lawyers under control. Lawyers like John Edwards (the Dem NC Senator) make millions on malpractice suits. In John Edwards case he made several million on a SINGLE lawsuit claiming something that has since been proven absolutley false by scientific studies. John's money was paid by the insurance companies who were providing malpractice insurance to the doctors and hospital involved.

Insurance has to pay a BS claim, Malpractice Insurance goes up.

Malpractice Insurance goes up, Medical fee's go up.

Medical fee's go up, Health Insurance Companies rates go up.

And WE, the consumer, are the ones who are really paying John Friggen Edwards.

    There is another item too.

Most countries with universal health care use price caps on medication. This means that most of the research and development cost for new medications are being paid for by the US and a few other countries consumers. I don't begrudge Canadians or anyone else their universal health care if thats what they want but I think they should be paying their fair share for meds and if they dont want to they shouldnt be getting them at all.

So you think price caps on medication is a bad thing ? How much of the price of medications do you think goes for research ?

Do I like high priced meds...no. But I understand a few facts of life. #1 Money makes the world go round.

If you look at the cutting edge in pharmacuticals, and every other from of medical science, since WW2 you're going to find US profit mongering companies and universities at the root of most of the discoveries. I'd guess somewhere around 85%. Look around the world and find out all the medications/medical breakthroughs used to treat real problems in the last 30 years and I bet you can find 10 US discoveries to match each.

Take the money (potential profit) out of the equation and you're going to find yet another way government can spend money with worse results than the private sector.
