Do national carriers give you a choice of areas?

If I did OTR I wouldn't really need much home time but one thing that I would like would be to be able to sometimes visit some family that lives far away in SoCal, Georgia, and Florida.

How common is it for a national carrier to assign you to areas you'd like to go to?

Your best chance to going to places is to work for trucking company that goes there anyway. Each trucking company serves particular areas. You ARE NOT going to convince a trucking company to send you to an area they don't go.

It's a trucking company, not a travel agency.

I 2nd this.....its a business first. Many people, in and out of trucking forget that. You'll need to work for a company that runs all 48

I think you'll find yourself in Liberal Kansas quite a bit.

That's why I said national carrier. I wouldn't expect to go somewhere that the carrier didn't service.

When I was hired by Knight, I met my DM and was asked where I want to run, I said Western 11 and that was that. Schneider also asked me and I told them Western 11 as well. Not sure how it would work out if you are new to the driving game. Even when I have told them "All 48 states", I drop the "no Upper North East".

Getting to SoCal should not be a problem for any big mega carrier and a lot of them have drop yards or operations centers in Fontana, Ontario, Otay Mesa or San Bernardino.

Just ask them. They’ll tell you exactly what you want to hear...

A question now that you mention that....

Did the OP mean “national carriers” as an adjective or proper name?

    D.Tibbitt and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.

Many carriers specialize in east coast or west coast. Some go everywhere in between
