The 102 is unbeatable

Good choice. It always amazes me people that ask other's opinions and then do the complete opposite but some actually want the advice and put it to use as it seems you have.

Yes you will pick up weather channels on a 102 whip. Think of it this way....CB radio is 27 mhz, weather radio is 162 mhz. Higher frequencies can use shorter antennas and vice versa. That's why walkie talkies have little antennas, because they're all UHF.
So yes if a 102 whip can pick up stuff on 27 mhz, it'll no kidding sure as the sun rises in the east every dawn, pick up 162 mhz. -
Close but no cigar .....
TRUE many walkie talkies ARE on UHF but many are not. I have them on CB and 10 meters also 6 meters, 2 meters, 223 mhz ( 1.25 meters ) and 440 mhz .... which IS on uhf.
The WT's used in WW2 the ones that were a long boxshaped unit with a pull ont wip were on 3.5 MHZ that's right 75 meters ! Durring Vietnam ( I was in commo them ) we had the PRC-6 banana radios on 50 mhz as well as the back packs PRC-10 and PRC-25 that went from 30 - 50 mhz.
Yep you just never know where that walkie talkie might be on ..... -
well guys im still trying to decide between 102 and a wilson 1000, my question is i can run a 102 on a magnet mount correct?
-
Maybe so but our walkie talkies we use at work (Motorolla 5000) which are a commonly used radio run on UHF. That's what I was referring to.
Yes you can run a 102 whip on a magnet mount, but you need a very strong one.
This is the one I have and it holds my 102 up no problems at all:

You could but why would you want to? Do you want something easy to disconnect when not in use? If that's the case just get the 102 and a hard mount and get a quick disconnect for it and you'll unhook the antenna in a matter of seconds. ( Google Breedlove machine shop for the disconnect )

Here at our jail we run on UHF and have about 1500 walkie talkies.
But they still make them from 30 - 1200 mhz and there are agencys using them. I run on 10 meters with a SSB/AM/FM one that is fun .... I have worked costa Rica from the frount yard on 28.400 USB and on 29.600 FM using a wip about 3 foot long.
They are fun no matter what band it's nice to be able to bring your radio with you. -
alright heres my lastest plan get a 102 and spring mount it right behind the cab on the front up bed rail. I will still get good reception correct the back of the cab is only about 2 to 3 foot high roughly so more than 2/3's will be above it
