A thousand brakes would not have fixed this.

Even if he had all Disc and full ABS capable of activating on dry pavement the stopping distance is a little over 230 feet. Still no where near enough. Root cause too fast for traffic and improper lane useage. (Far left) If I had to choose a secondary cause it's the lawman in the middle lane that created a traffic clog in a hurry around him for whatever reason.

Well that and the Lincoln turned into him. Maybe with full lock he could stop in 300 feet. Unfortunately he had 120 less feet than that.

Oh, and this happens all the time to me at stop lights. I see the light, I've got 500-800 feet to stop and then someone changes lanes in my path. Thanks #######!

What the hell was that cop doing in the left lanes, jesus. Say what you want about CHP but I've probably been caught up in hundreds of traffic brakes and they always do it safely. Yea the truck driver could have prevented that but that is just bad police driving.

    Situational awareness/planning is lacking.
Person driving can see and make out stuff further away and a lot easier then we can on the dashcam. He didn't come around a blind bend to slow traffic, he should have noticed the oversize load and slow traffic from at least double the distance of the start of the video and should have started slowing and been anticipating having to stop the min he saw that traffic ahead. He does say he was braking in the article, but the video not showing his speed might hurt him. Doesn't look like he slowed at all watching on my laptop.

If I may get a bit mathy,
    - Can see the oversize and somewhat see the slow traffic at the start of the video (viewing on my laptop) and the driver should have been able to see it before the video started.
    - Collision doesn't happen until 13 seconds into the video
    - Don't know his speed, but if he was doing 70, 13 seconds is 1334ft from the start of the video until the collision happens. 1128ft at 60mph, and 953ft at 50mph. Ample time to slow if he wanted to.
    - It IS possible for a truck to decrease it's speed by more then 10 miles per hour per second without locking the brakes, it's what triggers hard braking events for companies that install cams.

My unprofessional opinion is that he simply didn't want to come to a stop, he wanted to try and dart around the slower traffic with minimal slowdown and wasn't expecting the officer and other motorists to move over.

Idiot. Not paying attention. Just slow down and stay out of the left lane and wait it out. To big of a hurry

i fully agree with everyone saying too fast, inattention.

to me, he was/is nothing more than a steering wheel holder.

ANY true professional driver WOULD HAVE SLOWED DOWN, IN anticipation of some dipwad 4 wheeler jotting out in front of you.

seriously, i hope he gets nailed.

he might even be one of those "super truckers on you tube", wanting his "audience" to feel sorry for him, for the cops and other drivers making mistakes, that cost him an accident.

i'd like to see the laundry list of any charges and tickets he gets, and the letters from lawyers going to sue his butt.

heck, just the cop alone will have a great lawyer, thanks to the police union..

what a stupid SOB wheel holder..

I could care less of those tattle tales on the tractor sensors that decide if a hard event happened, not when lives potentially are on the line. I can throw a semi around well enough within limits. It would be the last thing I do.. ha. But I didnt hit anything and stopped. Yer Fired! etc.

I agree. Hated the thing when I worked for TransAm. Always on edge hoping it didn't go off for some stupid reason.

We had a thing that went off so many times I made a little sign that said "POTHOLE" and held it up every time it chirped.

After about 6 months, nobody checked the footage anymore unless there was an accident.

Well first and foremost... Thus driver was not slowing down as quickly or as soon as he should have been.

But secondly and nearly as bad... Is the fact that those cops rapidly closed off nearly all lanes of travel for what appears to be no reason at all.

IMO this is a 60/40 split with the driver at 60% fault and the cops at 40%. I'm not an attorney but if I was defending this driver I would be going after those cops.
