I will most likely be buying another truck before the end of the year. I continue to be back and forth on newer trucks or older pre emission trucks. Lately I've been looking at International Prostars. I know the maxforce is total garbage, but I have found numerous in this price range at this mileage and even lower miles that seems almost too good to be true.
This truck is a 2015 Prostar, X15 Cummins, 10 speed manual, 380,000 miles for $35,000. You can't buy a decent pre emission for much less if any. Which is the smarter move in your opinion?

I think anything but Maxxforce you can do better. Its the one bad platform to which payments were made of a sort to those damaged by such a pile of mess.
Dont give into temptation. Stick with what you know and try other trucks. -
I have an even older ISX15, the CM2250. The motor that tended to eat itself when the ceramic tappers in the fuel pump cracked. Mine was already updated with the new pump, and I haven't had a lick of trouble with the engine for the past six months of ownership.
Rumor has it that the CM2350 (which, going by year, is the most likely engine in the 2015 you are looking at) is a steady, reliable engine. One without the problems that plagued the earlier model. Like the aforementioned fuel pump, and a horrible ring design, and the occasional injector problem (yay fun!)
Just watch and maintain that DPF/SCR/EGR system like your engine's life depends on it! Which goes for any more modern emissions truck. -

I personally wouldn’t be a bit afraid of the X15, know several drivers with them, no complaints.
Get vin and engine # and call Cummins distributor see if DOC filter is on recall list or been replaced already maybe.
Very expensive!!
I’d highly advise educating yourself on the EGR system.
There’s half a dozen sensors you can clean/replace yourself in less than 20mins
I clean/replace about once a year.
Don’t misunderstand me, systems still the dumbest thing to come down the pike in along time, but, hey it’s choice ya gotta make.
I have ‘13 2250 ISX, never been on a hook, 6yrs and counting.
Mine’s nothing special, just FYI.

From what I've heard, the issue wasn't with the maxforce motor as much as it was in the emissions system on them. The motor just gets the blame because that's how people identified the trucks with the problems. I randomly called a dealer when I was considering buying one of them. He told me that early on, there where many problems with the emissions systems on those trucks. He said find a decent International shop now days, and they've learned enough about them to keep them running at a reasonable cost. The guy who told me that was not at the same dealer I was looking to buy from. He really had nothing to gain by telling me that other than maybe brand loyalty. Having said that, I didn't buy the truck at the time for personal reasons. So I have no personal experience to tell if he was legit or full of it.

I know my CM2250 is stone reliable thus far. She fires up and goes to work every day. But I'm also guessing the engine has been inflamed from before I bought her due to the fact I have yet to see with my own personal eyeballs a CM2250 get past 300,000 miles without an inframe. And mine now stands at 550,000 plus.
My next project is going to be a bake out and deep clean of the DPF and SCR, probably gonna replace any dodgy sensors and the wiring harness too.OldeSkool Thanks this.
