Maine cops call out truck driver who followed GPS onto muddy rural road


A sheriff’s department in Maine is warning drivers not to trust their GPS devices on rural roadways after a truck driver got stuck in deep mud.


On March 12, the York County Sheriff’s Office shared a Facebook post about one trucker’s tough morning as a cautionary tale about having too much trust in your GPS device:

Community members who live in rural York County know that GPS does not often know the roads. How many people have turned down Blueberry lane only to find it dead end into woods???
Well, a Pennsylvania truck driver, using a GPS device, was headed for Poland Springs when he took a wrong turn (following his GPS) and ended up on Carpenter Road, which is off of Clark’s bridge Road in North Waterboro.

Elfkey Gafar Basha, 49 or Harrisburg, PA. quickly became acquainted with mud season in Maine when he encountered deep mud on the unplowed road. He called 911 for assistance. Sergeant David Chauvette and a driver from Chandler’s towing Service located the driver. Basha was driving an empty trailer, scheduled to pick up water at Poland Springs. It took Chandlers 4 hours to get the vehicle back on the roadway.
