Company I'm leased on to wants me run reefer instead of dry van. I'm located in So-Cal and they swear I can do close to 8k a week running reefer opposed to dry van. Personally I think its all B.S. but some of you more experienced truckers feel free to chime in on the subject.

8k a week? Your an owner op? If that’s the case how come they have trouble finding drivers for 8k a week?

    TallJoe and magoo68 Thank this.

You'll definitely be able to make more on reefer than dry van, cant tell you how much. Reefer rates were 2.09 a mile last month, can you run 4000 miles a week?

I’ve had a few 8k weeks over the last year but that was running contracted freight. Can it be done off of load board freight?..I’m not seeing it yet. Possibly if all the planets were aligned you could do it but definitely not happening every week. More realistic would be 6k if you’re a runner.

Ask them if you could have an option to go back with dry van if you don’t like reefer.

Just to clarify, 8k is gross before any deductions.

    TallJoe Thanks this.

If you turn on a reefer to cool or heat product going to the other coast asap... its going to rake in the money, and if you DID NOT need a reefer for a load you can still play "Dry van" just a rather obese one at that. In terms of cargo capacity by weight. The volume is the same.

I like high dollar pharmacy reefer loads. The value in extremes do not scare me, it ensures that when I get there to the dock it's off he truck as fast as they can safely run the forklift and reload bales of cardboard back to memphis.

    However.

For about 8 weeks or a little bit less by a few days FFE had me and wife dedicated between Avenel And LA twice weekly turns. (CA to NJ and back to CA in 6 days) They made money hand over fist they paid us well during that happy time. mountains of money for two months. But half what we could have made if we both were paid mileage instead of salary. However we tried to be wise with it as company drivers and it saved us on 9-11.

Reefer is fun, PROVIDED you stay AWAY from parasitic lumpers, non union grocery or wait 3 days to load meat in say Fort Collins.
