Thinking about buying an 05 Volvo VNL with a cracked Block. What is this repair going to run me in all and is it worth it to repair. Great truck otherwise but don't want to buy a random and can't afford to get it on the road.

What kind of engine?
D13, D16
Or was that a ved12 cant remember when D13 started.. -
If it's a D16 don't do it, from what I've heard.
-
If it's a D16 let it sit where it is if it's a D12 I have an 05 right now that has almost 1.6 million it's sackless get ####y fuel mileage and runs great very weak engine brake it loves to eat my money if you're interested I'll sell it to you sorry not really the D12 is not a bad motor just not economic the cost for a used D12 would be around 5 to 7 k then another five or so to put it in if you can find the shop and of course the motor you don't know the history on so you might just be throwing all that money away on nothing

That truck is 15 years old. Unless you have service records of work that has been done to it it's not worth even trying to take things off of there and put it onto another engine.
That means that if you really want the truck to be Dependable you have two choices.
You can try to find a take out engine somewhere with low miles on it but if that engine hasn't been made in however long you probably won't find that.
The other option is a brand new engine. You should rebuild your fan and you can use your same flywheel housing.
Then, replace everything in between. New starter new turbo new water pump new heads new injectors new hoses new thermostats charge air cooler radiator and cap and everything else that is there. Also new clutch and flywheel and anything else the transmission or linkage needs.
Figure the price you will buy the truck for and what all that engine work will cost you and give yourself an extra $5,000 or so because an old truck like that is going to have other things wrong with it.
There is not a lot of value in an old truck with a bad engine like that, to me anyway.tommymonza and 401-Alex Thank this. -
I have a friend right now who has an 07 670 d16 around a million miles and we'll tell you about the woes I'm not being able to find parts in two to four days on order for a parts then sometimes being the wrong part I would highly recommend no D16
