Yep! I have spoken to mechanics that have said this too. In my last few years on the road, I drive one. It is harder to do. I compensated by trying to stop just as I got close to making contact, then slowly going on under. The thing is though. If you beat that 5th wheel up, it is not if it will finally fail, it is when it fails. This auto "jumping" can also cause problems in tight spaces.

The allegedly “better” ones have what is called the “urge to move” feature. It basically mimics the feathering of a clutch. Only problem is, the slightest resistance will totally stop you.

I never thought of that because I refuse to recognize an automatic transmission in a big truck as an actual thing. Lol!

I wouldn’t either until the day I had to start driving one.

Funny... my Mack Vision single screw had a 330 hp engine and a 10 speed. I peddled with it. I did linehaul runs with it. I dragged heavy pups across mountains with it.

Than the Peterbilts started showing up, with these godawful automatics. I think they threw us a bone with this hundred extra horsepower that comes with the Cummins X15.

I been noticing lately that seems to be the latest M. O. with a lot of companies. Slap you in the face by putting you in an auto but trying to make you feel better about it by doing it with a Pete or Kw with mo powa. Still not the same tho is it.

I’ve heard some automatics have a “creep” mode, mainly used for backing. Maybe this mode can help. I don’t drive an automatic.

Tough, because from what I’m hearing, the megas stopped buying them a few years ago, and eventually they’ll stop making them unless you make a special order. Also, all the automatics I’ve driven have had a noticeable better mpg than the manual trucks I’ve driven. Who knows what’s causing this higher mpg.

I personally couldn’t care less if it’s an automatic or manual as long as it’s profitable, then I want it. I also don’t care if the truck looks stupid, generic, or less masculine. I’m in business to make money. Maybe if I hauled luxury cars, I’d invest in a good-looking macho-man truck. For now, I’m cool with my Freightshaker.

Never forgotten to lower the gear.
Almost forgotten to raise it though. Hooked up and drug the trailer out because they were too close to squeeze between, then get distracted and almost drove off with the gear still down. scrape, scrape. what's that noise? oh crap.

High hooked once when I forgot to reinflate my airbags. Dropped empty right next to loaded, dumped airbags and pulled out. Trailers were both the same height so I thought 'no problem'. Moved over and backed under the loaded trailer. Felt resistance and thought it was the pin hitting the angled notch of the plate, but it was actually the pin sliding onto the top of the plate and I had the reefer unit slam into the back of my cab.

Had another high hook that was facilitated by a yard jockey in a tight lot. Hooked up fine, trying to pull the trailer out but the small lot was packed and didn't have space. Yard jockey offered to help so I dropped the trailer and he pulled it out so I could hook back up. Only problem was he ended up dropping it on a slope causing the nose to be higher up and I didn't realize when I went to hook back up. But didn't hit my cab with the reefer unit that time.

Nope, but every now and then I forget to put my fuel tank caps back on. Went through a truck wash once and got out to spray my tires with tire shine and realized my fuel tanks were left wide open.
