Another route is 64 from Dinosaur to Meeker, then 13 to Rifle. There are a few curvy roads, but no steep grades. I did get stuck behind some people herding sheep on the road once, though.

I-80 is better for fuel if you are heavy. I-70 might be ok if you are light.

US-287 from I-80 to I-25 is a roller coaster, might be better if you are light, still a lot of wind in the flatlands south of I-80.

As much of a circus that I-80 is, it has better averages.

    For future refere
For future reference, Hwy 9 is not a recommended truck route, especially in the winter, it is the 3rd road that will get a chain restriction put up, and often stay up for days on end when everything else is lifted.

If you're feeling brave (clean pair of shorts) next time, go south to 70, then take 50/550 So. to Montrose and take 50 East over Monarch pass. It's a lovely drive...………………….we sometimes use it to separate the steering wheel holders from the truck drivers (or SWIFT drivers from their trucks)

    loudtom and cgilliland Thank this.

Try 550 from Montrose to Durango. Fun ride!
