That does look like a dreadful load to tarp. No thanks!
One issue is flapping. Flat straps on loose material flutter and loosen even more. Roll 3 full turns in your straps so they become more rope like.. The round shape lets air blow right over without flitter so you arent stretching them out.
Next, you need something to spread the strap force out across the entire top. Big vee boards, brick screens, homemade 1x4 lumber panels or even dunnage. Its fine to lay dunnage over 2 or 3 pallet tops and clamp the load down all together, as long as your top heights are even. But you cant let straps get loose at all or youll spill timbers on the road.
For creek rock i put big edge protectors just to spread the force of the strap, and also make sure to crush the wire baskets down on both edges since theyll cut a fluttering strap. Again 3 full twists, and still have to tighten a click every time i stop. They just never stop settling. It is easy to flatten your vee board by accident tho. Round rocks in round baskets dont just make square edges for you.misterG, Tug Toy, PoleCrusher and 6 others Thank this. -

That works good too if you have the pallets. Seen it a few times. You can also lay dunnage over the top of side by side baskets from rubrail to rubrail and then lay the strap over that but its tedious getting the strap the stay fully on the wood while you tighten. Easy if youve got a helper.

After a few times around they tighten up reasonably well. Still gotta stop and check regular, that kind of stuff settles a lot. -
Sweet baby Jesus that’s the definition of ugly! You did a nice job of tarping it.
