Hello, I've been on this site for a while; but never posted so need to get involved some. I've been out of trucking for a couple years. Getting back in the game; purchased a 1999 T600 with 12.7 Detroit, 10 speed, 3.55 ratio. LP 22.5's. Pulling reefer, Midwest mostly flat.

Looking for some ideas on improvements to the engine. Looks pretty stock; but was supposedly turned up to 550 HP, 1850 torque by a guy in Oregon? Still working on verifying that. Will be getting it on the road in a couple weeks.

I previously ran a 2006 T600 with an ISX Cummins, 13 speed. This engine was a different animal, know the Detroit will need to run higher rpms for sure. Also will miss the 13 speed, may look at putting one in if the truck works out for me. I've heard a lot about the non waste gate turbos, manifolds etc, so am looking at that; but will run it for a while hopefully before spending too much on it.

A friend of mine swears by those engines. He has 7 frightliners with them, four of which pull sand cans for the gas wells around here. He likes the longevity, cost of parts/maintenance, and fuel mileage. I must admit, from what I've seen, he must be on to something. The only two issues I've noticed are that the guys he hires that don't know what they should try running them at a lower rpm, like you would a cat, and if you turn them up too much, the number five hole likes to burn out.

12 7 is a good engine, if it has been been tuned up , you should notice more pulling power.

1ST buy the Extra turbo boost and heat gauges if they are not in dash now, if its been bumped up in power the heat gauge for turbo so you will not burn up the 12.7 motor?

I have a boost gauge, looking for a pyrometer. Will probably go with Teltec, unless someone has a better idea.

Just my 2¢, I've had good luck with all the Isspro gauges I've had and/or added. They all come in a variety of sizes and operating ranges. 9 times out of 10, I can find one to fit an existing hole and hooking them up is usually pretty straight forward.

When hooking up the pyro would you go into the manifold before the turbo, or after the turbo in the exhaust pipe? Also what temperature is safe and what temperature should I stay under for either location? Thanks

Generally, the easiest way to do it is to get an elbow with a bung in it coming off the turbo and into the downpipe. There's a 2-300 degree difference between what the temp will read there vs what the actual temp is, so try to keep it at a max of 1000 degrees on the pyrometer if you wire it in as I stated. Personally, I try to not exceed 900-950, so I can have a little leeway if something starts going wrong.

Probe goes after the turbo, put it before and a tip breaks of you can loose a turbo.
Teltec gauges lets you set a high limit, it will blink when you hit limit.
