Hey guys I have a twin turbo mxs c15 peterbilt. Under certain RPM it will make a “shutter” sound and blow blue smoke. Does not do it all the time, if I’m idling it or putting the fuel to it all seems fine. When I am just meandering up a hill empty or pulling hard in low gear it tends to want to smoke up. Truck has lots of blow by. What should I be looking for here? I’m planning on doing a bronze rebuild soon but could it be as simple as the crank case breather tube being plugged?
Blow by, blue smoke, shuttering c15

My Detroit was doing that, I think the fuel lines are sucking air between tanks and pump. Check for bubbles in fuel tanks,if so it’s coming from the return lines.

Water in the fuel. Change filter

I do know that ACERT Cats have certain type of piston rings that can only be verified on a load dyno to measure the amount of blow by, not by looking at the tube.
The rings seal more when there is more pressure when working.
My BXS blew enough through the tube to make dust move on the ground but engine ran good.
Dyno test a few years ago showed blow by to be within specifications at CAT. -
I have yet to see an ACERT with no blow-by. My company just put a brand new C15 550 in my truck and it already has it. As for the shudder it sounds like a fuel filter. My old 625 did the same thing and a new filter fixed it

All engines will have a little blow by.
The ACERTS have a lot which is why we can’t judge engine health based on looking at the blow by tube.SAR Thanks this. -
If its drinking oil and fogging out the intersection youre gonna need that overhaul sooner than later.
They have high compression and high boost. They take ring lands off the piston. Lot of guys go back down to a lower compression piston and have better reliability. I think i was told its an oem marine application piston but dont hold me to that part. We have one c15 that just got overhauled and it did what u describe. The oil pressure gets low enough and itll derate. Will feel like hitting a brick wall when maxxed out and pointed up the mountain. Then itll surge back up and derate again. -
as for derating it never does that, only time it derated was when I had to change out the #5 and #6 IVA solenoid. Even then it seemed to just cap the boost to 25 psi, could still work the day.Last edited: Mar 18, 2020

It was my thinking that blue smoke was an oil issue and not fuel though?6wheeler Thanks this.
