Just got my dry van back. New shoes and drums. I had one bearing that was fixed incorrectly by a different shop awhile back and was full of gray metal soup, so they replaced that one. Inner outer bearings, races, seals, everything. This is an oil hub, 2015 Great Dane van with Meritor axles.

So, I just left the shop (empty) and ran 50 miles to a load and it's hot. Too hot to hold for more than a few seconds. IR temp gun shows 115. Ambient temp is about 70. All other wheels barely warm as usual, around 90.

Is this normal as a new bearing seats? Shop said no damage was done to spindle with former bad bearing.

    Thanks

Sounds like they might’ve tighten the lock ring and nut too tight

    Most likely too much pre-load.

Might be too tight. I had the same thing happen. Took it loose myself, loosened it one flat on nut. It still ran warmer for about 4 days. Now it’s fine. Best get it checked out. I’ve heard they run hot when new. I don’t know about that. A little warm maybe, but not hot. I had a seal go bad in the front last summer. Good thing, as bearing was scored from over tightening. Replaced it all myself. Still need to do right side. It seems fine, but might as well. Next time in 4 it 5 yrs, I’ll buy a whole hub kit. Races already installed. And switch to a one nut system. If it’s not right, it won’t last. Too many different style procedures out there. Some put them too tight Causes more problems than if a little loose. Checking end play with micrometer is the only way to know for sure. Nobody does it.

It seems to be breaking in. I picked up about a 15K load and ran about 60 miles to fuel and it was 10 or 15° cooler as soon as I stopped. I’ll keep checking it every few hours but I’m on a cross-country run now.

You can stick finger in there, feel at the bottom for metal grinding, look at it good. Sometimes new fluid looks like it has silver fine grinding, but is only small air bubbles.
