Anyone having gas filler doors on new Chevy trucks fall off during transport? Have had about 4-5 in past 2 months and 3 of them were nose first? Weird,,,Dealer is saying they only have had issues with ones that were transported(of course  ) and they're coming after us to pay it. In our eyes its no fault of the driver or ours since what difference would it make being transported or being driven?

    Thanks in advance,,,

Since it's happened multiple times for you, why not tape that sucker shut with some blue painter's tape?

Is it possible that by being high up that the airflow goes under the box and pushes them open during transport ..

Good point? At an angle too? Hadn't really thought about that. Our main dealer has been taping them before our carriers get there but I hadn't really heard of it on any other manufacturers or from previous years.

Evidently there is a problem if 4 or 5 of yours have done this and I am not questioning that it happened, but am curious why it happened and what load position. I assume these are used units and maybe after they have been used the door latch isn’t as strong as when I haul them new. I haul 3 loads of GM 1500’s a week year round and knock on wood haven’t had one blow off a 1500 in the last 8 years. I back or drive on #1 and back on #2 drive #3 drive #4 across the top. In the past with 1500’s I would back #3 and occasionally a mirror would blow open if there was a strong cross wind, but only in that load spot. Toyota tapes their doors shut, but I don’t and can’t tape the GM because they are off the rail and I can’t tape dirty units. When I hauled the Traverse from the plant in Lansing if we were backing one on the headrack it had to be taped or left open in transit. If they aren’t new units I would tape the doors or just open them for transit when backed on. To have one blow open when driven on is a mystery to me unless your rig has an enormous amount of turbulence in a certain position that my rig doesn’t have. The mirrors on the 1500 several years ago would blow back when loaded behind the cab. A different manufacturer that shall remain anonymous I had an issue with a sedan that blew the gas fill cover off backed on the top front trailer spot. It had happened to multiple other drivers loads in various spots and when it happened they covered it as a manufactures defect.

Thanks for the input. All the units have been 2500 and I think one 3500 SRW. These have been brand new units off the dealership lot direct to Oil/Gas companies. We're a broker so we didn't always know the style of trailer they were going on, what position they're loaded on or nose front or rear. The dealer has started to tape them before the driver shows up so hopefully it will cut down on the issues.

My main reason asking on here is to see if anyone else has had the issue other than our carriers.

Thanks again for the time you took to reply,,,

The tape should eliminate future issues.

I had a gas filler door blow off an Equinox going to a dealer in Missouri. He said to not worry about it and didn't bother to write it up as transport damage. He said they were getting them in like that so often they started stocking them prepainted in the parts department.

Haven’t experienced it on the pick up trucks but wow what a problem it was previously on the Equinox and Terrains. Talked to one guy that had lost 5 on an 8 unit load. I personally lost 2 of my first load.

Discovered it was the door latches. Whomever was putting gas in them, railhead or wherever, wasn't pushing in fully to latch the doors closed fully and unless you physically pushed on them to find out you’d never know it just looking. GM took the hit on them because it wasn’t a one off problem, but yeah those little covers are pretty darn tough to push so I can understand. NOT
