Weigh Station backed up to the road. Attn New Drivers

It’s tricky. Some weigh stations have signs indicating to bypass it when full. Other states don’t specify. MI and possibly other states have signs indicating to use the shoulder when full.

Personally I don’t worry about this scenario because I rarely bump into this. I bypass most weigh stations with my PrePass device.

I think the way I’ve been responding to this scenario is honestly by following what the rest of the drivers are doing. I know this isn’t exactly a good idea, but if a bunch of drivers are bypassing a full weigh station I’d feel more comfortable bypassing too as opposed to the other way around where everyone is pulling to the shoulder of the road.

in all my years, i ran past them...IF and only IF they were backed up....

ain't never been chased down either.

the age old argument (or debate) of "what if a 4 wheeler runs into the back of your trailer, while you are parked on the side of the road happens, who ultimately gets sued for that"?

aren't states held blameless for those situations?? as in, "the driver should have known better, than to park on the side of the road"..???

comes to mind...an age old debate/argument to just pass on by...

The answer about the Michigan coops chasing you or not is simple; it depends. Three decades of running that neck of the woods and it just depends if there is a cruiser in there or not. So it's a gamble and has been for 30 years at least.

If it's backed up onto the shoulder or still in the travel lane keep going. The "Slow down, Move Over" law was created because it's not "safe" to be on the shoulder. Why should I be put into an unsafe situation. It always bugs me when I see someone pulled over on the shoulder when there is an exit less than a 1/4 mile away, limp over there if you have to but get it off the road as far as possible.

I know what you’re thinking, but this really doesn’t apply because you are given 10 minutes to have the triangles out. Now that I remember, some weigh stations will start letting drivers go as soon as they notice the line is backing up to the freeway.

If I ever thought about using the shoulder at a weigh station and felt like I had to do the right thing. It may take me 10 minutes to get out and get legal ;)
