I can say for a fact that Oklahoma checked mine in 1982, running on my own numbers before it was the big thing, found out I needed 2 stamps, one for regulated and one for exempt.

It gets worse. Even if you had a fuel decal on the side of the truck, some states, Arkansas and Mississippi in particular, would pull almost everyone into the last scale before you left the state and ask for a fuel receipt. You better have bought enough fuel to cover the miles, at like 5 mpg. The 270 or so miles across I-40 and I-30 means at least 50 gallons of fuel. No receipt? Not enough fuel? You pay the fuel tax right there, and a small penalty.

My uncle told me states did that, measuring fuel. He may have mentioned Kansas. All i remember was the bingo card.

Guess I was unlucky. AL got me on I-20 coming from Hotlanta. And got caught at the state line. They had 20 cars running people 35 miles north to get a EFS check. That sorry cop ran 120 all the way up there and back. Stamp had ran out at Midnight. And had not gotten the new one picked up. Then Ar checked mine the next day.
But man it was fun back in the early 80's. Company I ran for could not haul for hire. So I ran out kicked off up to 50 drops . Run back to the yard with 3500 miles that week. Run all the way from up state NY or PA back empty. Also got a motel room every night. Company wanted us to get at east 4 hours sleep per 24 hrs.
Way to many weeks my logs met themselves. I would have the second or third book out.

I remember that, and hearing my grandmother ##### and complain about having to file fuel tax reports with every individual state.
