The bull gear can be checked by taking either of these off. The accessory gear has an o ring seal, the cover plate on other side, has a paper gasket. A pry bar can be used to check for play in the bearing. Any movement is bad news. It’s got a big roller bearing similar to a wheel bearing that goes bad. Usually makes a unsteady rattling or thumping sound, a good Mechanic can hear the familiar sound, I’m told.

    Dpeterson3530 Thanks this.

The series 60 engine in general is an excellent engine.

From what I understand, the bottom end is extra beefy and super heavy duty.

That was a good choice for you to buy.

Thanks, I might do that when we run the overhead. I didn’t change the oil pump either, it was changed once at 825k, so it’s got 1.3 mil or more. Pressures good, new check valves and elbow. Planned on waiting a couple yrs. to replace it. What do you think? Doing the oil cooler soon, and resealing oil pan anyways. Should I swap it out?

    Dpeterson3530 and jamespmack Thank this.

Last I check detroit still only recommends inspection and replace pressure valves.

I have never but once replaced a 03 and earlier detroit. Cause of failure was a small car hit and stuffed its self under a parked truck breaking the pickup tube. It was replaced just because.

    Very simple, low wear item.

You just inspect the gears for binding or bushings for wear. Service either or both and replace as needed. But if you have good psi, you most likely dont have a problem.

Thank you, I will do this and check for oil down the side, change oil with an analysis, check the bullgear, check DCA in coolant, also go to the local detroit diesel shop and bullsh** with them and see what they say just for fun. we had no snow here in North Dakota and then yesterday got hit with like 6 inches randomly, the truck is outside so will take a day or two until I can check all this out correctly I appreciate the help and will get back to you guys when I am able to crawl all around the beast.

To differentiate between the 12.7 big block and the 11.1 big block.
