This is a dumb question but...do i need a BOL if i hauling less than 50 miles.
About once a week i drive a tanker full of waste juice down to the water treatment plant and dump it.. the company says theyve never used them on this load and i cant find no exemptions on bols.
I had them print me out some blank forms and i fill them out on my own when i do tue load, im ELD exempt and the local companies i run for usually throw the bols in the trailer and i never touch them but i make my own for this load bc i run about 10 miles down the interstate.
Im eld exempt but i do drive a 53’ van/tanker

BOL is required, it has nothing to do with ELDs or the size or type of the trailer. Even though the BOL is usually issued by the shipper it is the motor carriers responsibility to provide the shipper with a completed BOL before leaving. The following is the exact regulation, note however it pertains to interstate shipments. Intrastate shipments, which is sounds like yours might be, are governed by the individual state. As far as I know all states require a BOL also under the same provisions.
as far as BOL 'thrown in the trailer' you should be signing it with a copy for you and a copy for them. Your signature is receipt of the load. Makes me wonder what else your company cuts corners on. If you should happen to get inspected it will be you who gets a ticket for no, or improper, BOL.
49 CFR § 373.101 - For-hire, non-exempt motor carrier bills of lading.
§ 373.101 For-hire, non-exempt motor carrier bills of lading.
Every motor carrier subject to § 373.100 shall issue a receipt or bill of lading for property tendered for transportation in interstate or foreign commerce containing the following information:
(a) Names of consignor and consignee.
(b) Origin and destination points.
(c) Number of packages.
(d) Description of freight.
(e) Weight, volume, or measurement of freight (if applicable to the rating of the freight).
The carrier shall keep a record of this information as prescribed in 49 CFR part 379.

When we empty our Septic onto a #### truck and THEY dump THAT into the City Sewer you can bet there is a BOL on my fridge. A solid Waste generator in the amount of such a such pounds. And fee paid. And thats as a homeowner or shipper rather of that waste.
BOL everything even if its a 50 mile haul. We have had loads in 18 wheelers less than that and those had BOL's not even think twice about it. If a revenue haul of whatever happened it had a BOL on it. -

The fuel is burnt (Spent) (The driver is paid and so on...) there are costs to every move.
If I have a truck, big or small. Im a hauling to make a profit. Otherwise forget the whole thing if there is no money in it or break even or worse losses.roshea Thanks this. -
CMV hauling product... you need BOL (to be legal) especially tanker, in case of accident and you're dead, how does fire rescue know what you're hauling ?

Just fill 1 out , just in case something unexpected happens.

When the 'MAN' wants to see your papers to see what is in the trailer AND you don't have any; you can expect to spend quite some time trying to talk your way out of it.
Caught in a road side and they let you make one up to continue your trip, the lack of one will still be written up just like the light bulb you manage to 'FIX' during the inspection..... -

In NJ there are Haz Waste AND Non-Haz Waste permits and a Non-Haz Waste Manifest for Non Haz liquid wastes....
Hi-C Fruit Juce [as part of Coke] had a plant in Heightstown, NJ and the sewer disposal of the jucy water was getting quite pricey so they explored trucking it a few miles to be irrigation for, of all things, juice trees on preserved farmland.
The NIMBY {Not In MY Back Yard} people in the bedroom developments around that farm protested long and hard and the township said NO despite the hauler meeting all the state requirements...the plant's sewer authority didn't want to loose their biggest commercial customer [and EZ to clean inflow] that made their plant work within guidelines.though it was closed a few years later and is still under-utilized today.
Roll over and spill it on someone's lawn and make some headlines...see what happens.
