    Back to freight rates, volume, etc.

    As others are noting, as the economy continues to contract, so is available freight. Don't need to be an "economist" to predict that ;-)

    The rate bump due to available freight I experienced in March is gone. Which was to be expected. Really no surprises with any of what is happening right now.

    My all miles for April are decent at $2.18. However, the availability of freight is beginning to diminish somewhat. I'm definitely working more than I'm used to, only because there's an underlying sense of building up as much cash flow as I can for the next couple of mos, in case it makes better sense to park it for a while.

    In the interim, I'll just keep doing what I always do, book one load at a time, for the best negotiated rate I can obtain, and provide excellent customer service!

    One day at a time...

    Bout all you can do.

    I'm pretty pumped. I got a call from one of my biggest customer's biggest direct competitor out of the blue, yesterday. It went well. The advantage of being keyed pretty well into a regional market is that you do work for one person, they know another guy, and then you get a referral out of that. Because I do work for the customer, I got referred to one of his vendors. His vendor referred me to a smaller competitor, who referred me to another customer, who then in turn referred me to these guys. Apparently they needed rates on a load of material I did for the customer who referred me.

    We got to chatting, and I explained what all I know, gave him my rates on the material to their area, and next thing I know, I got an email back with, "Wow, PPDCT, I'm sharing your name around with all of the guys over here. When this job comes up, it's yours."

    If I lock these guys in, I pretty much secure that entire market segment in that area. It's kind of exciting.

    Update around here:

    We are in a free fall plum off the cliff right now. Rates are right at the worst I’ve seen in 12 yrs and they will only continue to worsen for a good 3 to 5 weeks to come. That depends on how much capacity leaves the market, more so then how much volume comes back.

    Buckle up that wing suit and try and learn to fly! Goal is to not be one the early ones to hit the ground so that you can feel that gust of upward fresh air. Spread those wings and navigate to where the updrafts are.

    Edit: For those that follow yes we have transitioned from boat sailing to wing suiting lol
