I work for a small company delivering appliances for GE. Delivery trucks are 40' straight trucks, sometimes they are out over 12 hours. Are they required to carry truck inspections and logs with them. All of the drivers have to have their DOT before driving

That's a heck of a straight truck. There are a lot of variables. Are they outside of 100 air mile radius, crossing state lines, what's GVWR, are they airbraked? Did the freight cross state lines ? Are they punching a clock in and out each day? For example, I'm a city driver for R&L. I don't cross state lines but my freight does, so I'm under Interstate regs. I am log exempt because I stay inside a 100 air mile radius of my home terminal and clock in and out each day at the terminal. Our DVIR's are now electronic so I don't carry a book anymore.

If you are on a time clock to work locally clocking and clocking out before coming to and leaving work? Eh no. But if you go beyond a certain distance yes.

As far as DVIR yes, vehicle needs to be without defects by you the driver. Company must fix whatever you find wrong with it.

Anything more than that depends on other things. Small trucks is not my fort'e so others will chime in.

Did crossing a state boundary EVER override the 100 air-mile exemption of logbook requirement? I was told that by numerous drivers before 1999. I believed them. I was OTR only before 1999 so the issue was academic for me. I started working under the 100 air-mile rule in 1999. My company was very strict and I know either in 1999 when I started or shortly after 1999 my operation routinely operated using the 100 air-mile rule and also just over a state boundary here and there. The only thing that triggered a requirement to fill out a log page was going beyond the 100 air-mile radius or working beyond 12 hours in a shift. State boundaries were NEVER a trigger for anything.

DVIRs are no longer required by the FMCSA when the driver has neither found nor been made aware of any vehicle defects or deficiencies. I would think one not too smart finding a defect(s) listing them on a DVIR and then driving around with it.

What does air brakes and state lines have to do with inspections and logs?

That's wrong. Any CMV over 10,000 gvwr needs to log. All the 26,000 limit adds is a CDL and drug testing requirements (or is it med card?). But all CMV's must follow logging laws (even if said laws allow for an exemption like time card).

Before slamming another poster for not knowing what he's talking about, you might want to know what you are talking about.....
