If you can pass a D.O.T physical then your good to go I would think. Health insurance is separate thing. Your health insurance will pay for any medication you need. Depending on how good the health insurance is. You don't really want to talk about your medical stuff with a trucking company. You just need to be able to pass the D.O.T physical they will give be you. You would have to tell the doctors what meds you are taking. If they pass you then your good to go.. Some drivers have sleep apnea and you have to show you have it under control. They might only give you 1 year medical card and you have to pass the D.O.T physical every year.

Regarding Medicines, As of fairly recently you are held in any doctors office a short time while they look up your Prescription Monitoring Board information online that is tied to YOU personally with ANY medicine and number and name of you ever filled at a pharmacy.
They already know whats what before they even walk into your office.
My last dentist did that before he saw me and I briefed him. Then explained what medicines are fatal to me and which are good and the magic word that got him upset was meperidine or better known as Demerol as being good against any pain I may have, even superior to Fent, Dila and others without the mental difficulty. He did not want to hear it. So followed prescribing of tiny medicine for a short time. I ended up storing them until needed PRN (As needed) and take a total of 30 mg one time to fight breakthrough issues)
Medicines are some of the most difficult of converstations today depending on what they are currently in your life so be straight with the doctors questions. Do not try to evade or decieve. There are 4 formal batteries of questions designed to help the doctor understand exactly what you are vs medicines. -
Just get the CDL first. Keep quiet about medications during Physical. Nobody’s business but your own. Don’t ever mention the condition, unless you spot someone who needs your help. Doesn’t matter what job you want. Keep it to yourself. Stigma of mental illnesses are alive and well. Don’t expect anyone to understand. They won’t. Worse, they’ll treat you different because of it. Chances are your more stable than the average “ normal” person anyways. The thing to realize is, they ask a question, give them the answer they want to hear. It’s all about Liability. Leave them off the hook, they won’t care otherwise. Good Luck.
austinmike and Dennixx Thank this. -
While the drug and condition may not be disqualification for a CDL. Have you spoken with your medical providers about your intent. They may have to provide a letter of clearance for you, before any company may consider employment.

Well, what is schizophrenia? Just a few of the definitions include, inability to think clearly, delusions, hallucinations, behavior that impairs daily function, not a happy situation. Sorry to wake you up, but trucking will exacerbate all those issues. Like any medical condition, I don't think a truck is the best place if you run low on medication.

At this point in time, to think being in a truck ensures a 'decent' living seems rather delusional. After reading a recent article on "Freightwaves" I'll be surprised if driver mills don't scale back to $0.31/mile again.
