There's a $1000 forced escrow for chargebacks etc if something comes up after you leave. Not the maintenance account type.

I was there 12 years ago and Laredo was a place you just didn't go to unless you already had something coming out. Should only take one trip down there to figure that out. And the loads out were there.
There is definitely a learning curve at LS, and the sooner you can get away from being totally dependent on the load board the better you will be. -
As to the base plate..
I have my own.... 1st year was $1,450.. cash
Each year after that it will change depending on the miles and states you run.....
I've never had to pay over $1,600
My base plate is TNF4T6UY Thanks this. -
So, (and again, I’m knew you all this) if I get my own plates, does that mean I need to get my own bobtail/unladen, or can I use Gallagher or whoever it is that Landstar uses? And what other things would I then be responsible for if I get my own plates versus using Landstars? Does Landstar still keep track of IFTA and other things?

If you get your own plate
YES you can use Gallagher if you wish
YES landstar will do your ifta
If you plan to get your own plate or go with a landstar's plate you must first file IRS form 2290.... it's $550 per year. It's due 7/1 and must be paid before the last day of Aug.... first year is prorated... so say you did it in may you would owe 2 months (may, june) then in July you would owe $550....
