It’s only hard on the body if nothing is done to take care of your body. This is my 23rd year out here and I’m in better shape now than when I started. Up until a year ago the only things I had done was pulling a flatbed and hauling livestock, both things aren’t the easiest on your body. Now, I exercise and I don’t eat carbs or sugar. And I feel great.

I was one of those who could work on a plate of Steak, vittles and trimmings that take half the table at Whites or some where quality. Might cost me a few dollars but the calories are spent in that frozen warehouse throwing cases. In winter I have gone through approximately 8 to10,000 calories in food items 5 meals a day and night round the clock when working very hard into my early 40's I could count on certain foods to gain power to get the job done.

If I ate like that today I would be dead from Obesity like some members of family before they hit 38 when their hearts failed them. Those are the ones that get cut out of a entire apartment or house wall to cart to a rig strong enough to dispose of the remains in the crematory special burn. I still enjoy a good meal now and again, as in a few times a year OR much smaller versions of that steak, vittles and salad.

And above all there is without fail cases of water and other hydrating fluids under the center bunk storage. Always. That is usually a never out item.

My sister, who was clean as a pin, died at 41 of brain cancer, and I WAS THE ONE, who drove fast motorcycles and snowmobiles, and a shaky trucking lifestyle,,,go figure.

Usually it's strokes that kill us into the late 90's

God knows everything else should have or almost did among us all. Stories abound.

My Pa was pretty particular with food with the wife, the original kraut and sausage among other wonderful foods from his childhood. Changed over later in life to more or less healthy fare. He developed diabetes type two which is somewhat unusual. I am keeping a eye on that myself as well.

Baltimore City back in the day was the whole world of food. Divided by blocks of various Nations with their own fare. Its changed quiet a bit since my day however you can still find what you seek there. At least to accommodate the sailors from the Sea more or less.

Tell me about it coming from Wisconsin. We led the nation in obesity for years. Beer, french fried cheese curds and bratwurst dripping, what's the worst that could happen?

I am 34 but I definitely feel older most of the time. I think that's just the way it is for most of us. Plus I went through chemotherapy 6 years ago... that alone had to age me 20 years lol.

Now I am a flatbedder (best move I ever made), and I only do local deliveries, and I load and unload myself so I stay pretty active. Gotta stay active any way you can. Even if it's just walking around the truck stop parking lot.

I've seen a lot of guys with back and leg issues. Some of kidney trouble, whether it's from the crap the drink and sitting all day or getting bounced around in the truck. Skin cancer can be common sometimes, mostly the older crowd that drove before they put all these special coatings and stuff on the glass.

Honestly, other the the environmental stuff like back aches and knew problems all of us are at risk in one way or another to any decease. I know a fitness trainer guy who took ridiculous care of himself, ate clean, worked out, super fit and active and almost died from a massive heart attack...and he was doing everything right. The best you can do is take care of yourself and stay active and deal with whatever comes....take things seriously and don't put them off. Ignoring the problem can literally kill you.

I’m 57 and have been working an, at times, hard, physical job that has kept me “not fat,” but I wasn’t really “in shape.” My wife had an epiphany of sorts a year ago. She lost 40 lbs, started getting up at 4 a.m. to go to the gym, has completed her first 5k, and is now a fitness instructor. The transformation was incredible.

Lucky me. :) But I started feeling guilty when I looked down at the ol’ gut, and decided to get back in shape myself. I stumbles across a youtube channel called Jump Rope Dudes. They use jump ropes from Crossrope, which are high-end sets.

They’ve got a fun workout app which lets you choose type and intensity of workouts. The beginner routines ease you into it. You can do a 16 minute workout during a 30 minute break. Download the free app to see the routines (crossrope). I really enjoy it. The beginner routines are already becoming too easy for me, so I extend the jumping and decrease the rest interval.

I’m not okay with trucking ruining my health, so working out on the road is mandatory for me, as well as eating right (Mediterranean diet).
