So I'm thinking about swapping the 3.90 rear differentials I have now to 3.58 or 3.42. The differentials have 850,000 miles on them and are Rockwell 20-145.

There is an authorized Rockwell shop that told me that to change the rear diffs, you need to remove the driveshafts and undo 26 bolts holding the differential carriers in place. The rebuilt carriers are all pre-shimmed and ready to go. Sounds like a BIG DIY project but doable.

The in-house repair shop that the company has told me that swapping the differential carriers isn't the problem, it is lining everything up. I can use this shop's wash bay on weekends and have access to all the tools.

    So whose right?

Lining what up? They come out one way they go in one way! I’ve used everything from a forklift to an engine puller. Just a lot of dang work without proper equipment! But it can be done and has by many unshaded no tree in Texas wanna be mechanics!

The only trouble I see is the fact that they are so heavy and odd shaped.

What about the yokes? The nuts are very tight.

Labor is cheap compared to the cost of the reman diffs. Pay a shop that knows what they are doing to stuff them. Screw it up and have to do it again and you will wish you had.

One time only, changed a front diff on dump truck side of the road. Used the bed to lift it.

I can rebuild diffs. Why dont I? Because the time it takes to order and assemble new parts. Get remans from a reputable shop. Swapping them can be done in a parking lot by a monkey. Why pay for someone else to do that? Biggest thing is cleaning the housing to perfection and might as well do wheel seals even of they ain't leaking. Heck a every day engine crane makes it simple.
