Now I know that glider kits have engines which are old enough to be exempt from ELD requirements, but can you still use ELDs on them if you want to?
I personally have no problem using ELD, in fact I hate using paper logs. The company I want to lease on to requires that you use ELD. I would love to get a gilder for reliability and never have to worry about the emissions systems.
Maybe this is a dumb question, but Google won't give me a straight answer. It would make sense to me if you can't use ELD on them since (correct me if I'm wrong) the engines are mechanical diesel engines.
Can you use ELD on a glider kit truck?

If it has an ECM - you can plug an ELD in.

Yes, the company I work for has about 70 trucks and at least 75% of them are glider kits, older Series 60's. All of our trucks have ELD's with the exception of one. It's a new 579 daycab. The computer won't read when the truck is in motion. That driver just runs paper

Depends on which engine you put in it. If it provides all the correct data then yes you can. Even if not, there is still a good chance you can install an AOBR.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Thanks everyone else for the replies. So is there any way I can know what to look for when buying a glider if I want to run elogs?Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
This all assumes the engine model year is a 1999 or older... Model year of 2000 and newer still require an eld, even if it is a glider.Dieselboss and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
what does dot use to verify its eld exempt. mine shows serial number on engine and i have a sheet from detroit with original date. but nothing on engine says year. should i keep the elog in or just paperwork needed

I thought the purpose of a glider was to keep away from emissions, not ELD?

You can run an electronic log without an eld.
