Well I don't think that transparency with the broker translates into a guaranteed rate. There still is supply and demand and depending on the number of loads to trucks the brokers would probably get a higher or lower percentage.
This business is supply and demand. As it stands the cycles occur where there are times it's more profitable and less profitable And more people jumping in or more people get pushed out.
If an owner operator made $150000 I don't think that even keeps up with the cost of living from the eighties.
So my feeling is that anything that artificially keeps the rates down such as double brokering or non transparent brokers is worse than the alternative of more trucks or more competition. There will always be that.
Not to mention that if every person ran out and bought a truck someone has to drive company trucks. So the rates would probably rise for company drivers also.
The free market always finds its equilibrium.
I agree with most everything that you said except for the above quote.
For one thing there are back solicit agreements And for another the need for brokers will not change. Most shippers do not want to deal with small outfits. They would rather have one broker or a couple of brokers that can handle their entire shipping needs.
How to enforce that a broker will not double broker and that the rates are truly transparent?
Well they should lose their authority and lose their bond and have to pay an additional fine of say $25,000 or something like that. If a truck owner can be fined $10,000 for having red fuel in his truck, a broker most certainly should be fined that or more if he's found doing any of the above offenses.
If the punishment is severe enough it's not worth their while to do it.

The best money I ever made was when I was a young, strong and very skilled roofing contractor. I had a couple of helpers I hired to help me. As long as I was on the roof, everything went well.
As soon as I decided that if 1 roof at a time made me such good money, I should do 5 roofs at a time!
Then came the additional employees, equipment, office, etc, etc, etc. Boy was I ever wrong.
Should of listened to my wife! LOLtommymonza, Brettj3876, PPLC and 4 others Thank this. -

Truckers say they're facing another pandemic -- 'cheap rates' from brokers
Scroll to bottom for video of woman owner operator pleading for public intervention and awareness of how so many small owner operators are really struggling right now.
I'm sorry if someone has already posted this somewhere else.Last edited: Apr 29, 2020

Massachusetts used to have 20something state forests that allowed atv/dirtbike riding when i was a kid. As a young adult I was a land access rep for a 4wd association in that state and solicited many bureaucrats. Every atv in that state must pay annual registration fees or face being siezed for failure to pay tags. You know what 100% of the tag revenue is used for? Enforcement... Meaning the money you pay them for a tag goes only to siezing bikes from people who didnt. Now the promise was that it would go to the forests we could ride in. Well by the time i quit in disgust there was i think 6 left and access was limited in some unique way at each. And it was two greenies, gary briere and becky barnes, who got jobs in that fish and wildlife dept specifically to stop atv use on state land, so one of them confessed to me.
I got shook down by the NYSP at a rest area. They claimed my homemade trailer was stolen and took truck and trailer to a tow racket impound with an OOS order. I was sleeping at a rest area when it all happened. The troopers would not begin their fake "investigation" for a month at $125 a day storage. It cost me $3k and a bogus criminal charge. I reported it to the NY attorney general. Its been 4 years, never heard a thing.
Moral of the story is never ever make new government positions. It just becomes a another ivory sniper tower for some infiltrator to get appointed to and harrass us from any time we try to make a buck. The govt cant even keep its own blatantly corrupt self in check. It is not sharp enough to stay ontop of cut throat brokers. Theyre too clever and will develop masks to slide by overnight. You dont want more govt looking to justify its budget.
For God's sake havent we got enough?tommymonza, Midwest Trucker, Dale thompson and 2 others Thank this. -
I'm seeing Convoy rates creeping up just a little from here in NorCal to the PNW. Just noticed the first $2 per mile load I've seen in well over a week. Hopefully a sign things will be improving soon.

Boy, tonight has been a general hotbed of activity on this forum. It's enough to make me look over my shoulder for the pitchfork and torch wielding mob.
Seriously, though, it's enough to make me laugh. Lots of "evil brokers" posts all over the place. I swear, reading some of this stuff, I'm apparently doing it wrong. I should be laying down on a mattress made of hundred dollar bills from my 4000 sq ft master bedroom centered in the caldera of my volcano lair.
@wichris when do I get that sweet upgrade?Truckermania, whoopNride, Midwest Trucker and 4 others Thank this. -
