The one thing young ones don't get to do is understand their true limits in range and endurance.
For example with careful use of certain foods and fluids I could run 9 days and 8 nights at 25 years old without laying down to sleep. Straight through essentially. There is no point even trying to add up the miles or reconcile the three logbooks. But when its all over and two days home to sleep it off ready to do it all over again on day three.
Hence the term you slept next week.

You worked on finding a company that provided airride, power steering, satellite and freedom of action. No governor either. If you got caught you paid up instantly and go on. Sometimes the law when they see you paid something 5 minutes after they wrote it it did not happen. Particularly in days before computers such as they were.
You needed some humor and a little bit of sass around Lawmen in particular. The last good parking ticket I got, they stood there pointing to 20 odd parking signs and posts under my drives in a pile. You are parked in a no parking zone on my signs WTF? Its 70 dollars ticket to you and you are lucky we don't go through your *&^% for more.
Fine, write it I pay it right now. And yes that is a nice pile of signs. Dont some of you have to hold them up by hand for us to see?
WTF? *&^% sometimes the tickets got bigger to go with the sass. Pay em. FAST.
However, everything became JIT. Just in time model. Consider a load of transmissions in crates going to a auto factory in Pontiac. You cannot and will not stop until all those crates are in the building off your truck on time or even early.
However a load of potato chips into a grubby associated grocers is not that important, you will sit a day or night or both waiting on dock. They will get to you sometime. Just wait. and wait some more.
Suddenly JIT Potato chips. HA... as if. But there it is. Be there on time or early. Or they will find someone to do it. You are abused as a warehouse extra storage now. Not being able to go to and sit in many warehouses like in the past. Those are expensive to those in big business. Hence the JIT model.
How much better was it back in the day

From what I have read freight rates were higher way back in the day and that’s part of why the pay was better. My theory on why freight rates are so low is because there are more trucks then there were 30-40 years ago and their all competing for the same freight. Back in the 70s/80s fewer trucks so rates were high but with so many trucks trying to haul the same freight it drives the price down.
